Ignition Coil

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the ignition coil and check the coil with an ohmmeter for an open or ground.
  2.  
  3. Connect the meter as indicated in Step 1 (meter on the high scale). Should read very high or infinite. If not, replace the coil.

  1. Connect the meter as indicated in Step 2 (meter on the low scale). Should read low or zero ohms. If not, replace the coil.
  2.  
  3. Connect the meter as indicated in Step 3 (meter on the high scale). Should not read infinite. If it does, replace the coil.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Externally Mounted

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly, if necessary for access to the ignition coil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the secondary coil lead, using a twisting and pulling motion on the boot.
  6.  
  7. Detach the harness connectors from the coil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil mounting screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil. If necessary, carefully drill and punch out the rivets holding the coil to the bracket.

To install:
  1. Place the ignition coil into position, then install the mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Attach the harness connectors to the coil. Make certain the connectors are fully seated and latched.
  4.  
  5. Install the secondary lead to the coil tower, making sure it is fully seated.
  6.  
  7. If removed, install the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Integral Coil
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the distributor cap.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three coil cover retaining screws, then extract the cover.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the coil attaching screws, then lift the ignition coil and leads from the cap.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the ignition coil and leads in the cap, then secure using the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the coil cover, and fasten using the screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the distributor cap, then connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
