CAUTION
Some models covered by this information may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in this section.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Skylark
1985-89 VEHICLES

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cluster trim plate, headlight and wiper switch trim plates and the switches.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws fastening the cluster to the instrument panel pad, pull the cluster out to unplug all connectors and, then remove the cluster.
  6.

  1. Remove the lens and gauge trim plate to gain access to the speedometer assembly attaching screws and remove the speedometer or gauges. If equipped with digital gauges, replace them as an assembly.

  3. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and check all cluster-related components for proper operation.
  6.  

1990-92 VEHICLES

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column opening filler.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cluster trim plate.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with a column-mounted shifter, disconnect the PRNDL cable clip from the shift collar on the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the screws retaining the cluster to the instrument panel pad, pull the cluster out to unplug all connectors, then remove the cluster.

  1. Remove the lens and gauge trim plate to gain access to the speedometer assembly attaching screws and remove the speedometer or gauges. If equipped with digital dash, replace it as an assembly.

  3. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and check all cluster-related components for proper operation.
  6.  

1993-95 VEHICLES
  1. If applicable, properly disable the SIR system. For details, please refer to the procedure located in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cluster trim plate by unfastening the two retaining screws and pulling the plate rearward the disengage the clips.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the four cluster retaining screws, then rock the top of the cluster rearward to remove it from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the cluster to the instrument panel, then secure using the four retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the trim plate by aligning the clips to the holes and pressing in, then securing with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  4.  

Calais
1985-91 VEHICLES

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column collar.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column opening filler and cluster trim plates.
  6.  
  7. Lower the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws fastening the cluster to the instrument panel pad, pull the cluster out to unplug all connectors and remove the cluster.

  1. Remove the lens and appliquÈ, if necessary, to gain access to the speedometer or gauges attaching screws and remove the speedometer or gauges.

  3. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  5. Connect the negative battery cable and check all cluster-related components for proper operation.
  6.  

Achieva
1992-95 VEHICLES

See Figure 4

  1. If applicable, properly disable the SIR system as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster trim plate as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel and column cover.
    2.  
    3. Unfasten the retaining screws, then pull the trim plate back enough to detach the electrical connectors.
    4.  
    5. Remove the trim plate.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Unfasten the four cluster retaining screws, then remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position the cluster to the instrument panel, then install the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument panel cluster trim plate as follows:
    1. Attach the cluster electrical connectors, then position the panel, and secure with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel and column cover.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Enable the SIR system as outlined earlier in this section, if applicable.
  6.  
  7. If not done already, connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Achieva
1985-91 VEHICLES

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

  1. Unfasten the three screws at the lower edge of the cluster, then remove the trim plate.
  2.  
  3. On some models it may be necessary to remove the lower trim panel to access the steering column cover bolts.

  1. Remove the bar above the cluster assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws fastening the cluster to the instrument panel pad, pull the cluster out to unplug all connectors and remove the cluster. Some maneuvering is required to pull the assembly from the dash.

1992-98 VEHICLES
  1. If equipped, disable the SIR system as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove instrument panel cover as follows:
    1. Remove the drivers side air deflectors by pulling rearward gently.
    2.  
    3. Carefully pry upward with a rocking motion alternately on the left and right retaining clips, then remove the cover.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the left instrument panel trim plate as follows:
    1. Remove the left sound insulator and the steering column filler.
    2.  
    3. Remove the fuse cover.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the two retaining screws, then remove the plate by pulling to disengage the clips.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Unfasten the cluster retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the right cluster trim plate retaining screws. Pull the trim panel back far enough to remove the cluster.
  12.  
  13. If applicable, detach the electrical connector(s), then remove the cluster completely from the vehicle. Some maneuvering is required to extract the instrument cluster.
  14.  
  15. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and check all cluster-related components for proper operation.
