Windshield Wiper Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Grand Am
1985-91 VEHICLES

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cluster trim, instrument panel trim or wiper switch trim screws, as required.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the wiper switch attaching screws.
  6.  
  7. Pull the switch out, unplug the connectors, then remove the switch assembly.
  8.

  1. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Connect the negative battery cable and check the wipers and washers for proper operation.
  4.  

Skylark
1988-91 VEHICLES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel sound insulator, trim pad and steering column trim collar.
  4.  
  5. Straighten the steering wheel so the tires are pointing straight ahead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the plastic wire protector from under the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the turn signal switch, wiper switch and cruise control connectors, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. To disassemble the top of the column:
    1. Remove the shaft lock cover.
    2.  
    3. If equipped with telescope steering, remove the first set of spacers, bumper, second set of spacers and carrier snapring retainer.
    4.  
    5. Depress the lockplate with the proper depressing tool and remove the retaining ring from its groove.
    6.  
    7. Remove the tool, retaining ring, lockplate, canceling cam and spring.
    8.

  15. Pull the turn signal lever straight out of the wiper switch.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 3 screws and remove the turn signal switch and actuator lever.
  18.  
  19. Remove the ignition key light.
  20.  
  21. Place the key in the RUN position and use a thin suitable tool to remove the buzzer switch.
  22.  
  23. Remove the key lock cylinder attaching screw and remove the lock cylinder.
  24.  
  25. Remove the 3 housing cover screws and remove the housing cover assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the wiper switch pivot pin and remove the switch.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Run the wiring through the opening and down the steering column, position the switch and install the wiper switch pivot pin.
  2.  
  3. Install the housing cover assembly, making sure the dimmer switch actuator is properly aligned.
  4.  
  5. Install the key lock cylinder and place in the RUN position. Install the buzzer switch and key light.
  6.  
  7. Install the turn signal switch and lever.
  8.  
  9. To assemble the top end of the column:
    1. Install the spring, canceling cam, lockplate and retaining ring on the steering shaft.
    2.  
    3. Depress the plate with the depressing tool and install the ring securely in the groove. Remove the tool slowly.
    4.  
    5. If equipped with telescopic steering, install the carrier snapring retainer, lower set of spacers, bumper and upper set of spacers.
    6.  
    7. Install the shaft lock cover.
    8.

  11. Connect the turn signal switch, wiper switch and cruise control connectors. Install the wire protector.
  12.  
  13. Install and steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering column trim collar, lower instrument panel trim pad and sound insulator.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and check the key lock cylinder, wiper and washer, cruise control, turn signal switch and dimmer switch for proper operation.

Calais
1985-91 VEHICLES

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column cover.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the four retaining screws from the steering column opening filler and the four screws from the cluster trim plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screw mounting the wiper and rear window defogger switch.
  8.

  1. Pull the switch rearward to detach both connectors, then remove the switch.
  2.  
  3. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the wipers for proper operation.
  6.  

Grand Am, Skylark and Achieva
1992-98 VEHICLES

CAUTION
Some models covered by this information may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in this section.

  1. If equipped, disable the SIR system as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. On models without a airbag, remove the horn pad and the steering wheel. For details, please refer to Suspension & Steering of this information guide.
  6.  
  7. On models with an airbag, remove the inflator module and steering wheel. Refer to Suspension & Steering for details.
  8.  
  9. If applicable, remove the tilt lever from the column. If necessary, use locking pliers with a piece of rubber (such as a spark plug boot) between the jaws to help prevent damage to the tilt lever during removal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers, then extract the dampener assembly.
  12.

  1. Detach and remove the headlight switch assembly, then extract the windshield wiper switch assembly.
  2.  
  3. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, the check the wipers for proper operation.
