Lock Cylinder
1985-91 Vehicles

On 1985-91 vehicles, the lock cylinder is mounted directly below the door handle.

  1. Raise the window to the full up position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the inside door trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Detach the water deflector enough to access the lock actuator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower window channel retainer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lock cylinder retaining clip.
  10.  
  11. Disengage the lock rod from the door lock cylinder and remove the lock cylinder.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect the door lock rod to the lock cylinder.
  2.  
  3. Position the door lock cylinder and engage the retaining clip.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower window channel retainer.
  6.  
  7. Fasten the water deflector.
  8.  
  9. Install the inside door trim panel.
  10.  

1992-98 Vehicles

On 1992-98 vehicles, the lock cylinder is mounted to the door handle. The lock cylinder can be removed from the handle once it is removed from the door.

  1. Raise the window the fully closed position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety purposes.
  4.  
  5. Remove the door panel.
  6.  
  7. Carefully peel back the water deflector to access the door handle and lock cylinder.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower window run channel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two bolts that secure the door handle to the door.
  12.  
  13. With the handle loose, carefully disconnect the rods from the handle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the nut that secures the lock cylinder, and remove it from the handle.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Place the new lock cylinder into the handle, and install the nut and tighten it securely.
  2.  
  3. Connect the rods to the handle.
  4.  
  5. Position the door handle to the door, and tighten the bolts securely..
  6.  
  7. Install the lower window run channel.
  8.  
  9. Position the water deflector onto the door.
  10.  
  11. Install the door panel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Lock Mechanism
1985-91 Vehicles

See Figure 1

  1. Raise the window to the full up position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inside door trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Detach the water deflector enough to access the lock actuator.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the outside handle-to-lock assembly rod.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the lock cylinder-to-lock assembly rod.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the inside handle-to-lock assembly rod.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the lock assembly screws/bolts and remove the lock from the door. If equipped, detach the electrical connectors.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Attach the electrical connector (if equipped), position the lock assembly to the door and install the retaining screws/bolts. Tighten the screws/bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Do NOT overtighten.
  2.  
  3. Attach the outside handle to the lock assembly rod.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lock cylinder to the lock assembly rod.
  6.  
  7. Connect the inside handle to the lock rod and inside locking rod.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the water deflector.
  10.  
  11. Install the inside door trim panel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

1992-98 Vehicles

  1. Raise the window to the full up position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the door trim panel
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the water deflector enough to access the lock actuator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower window run channel by unfastening the retaining bolt (located under the water deflector), then pulling up on the channel to detach the retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the door outside handle and lock cylinder.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inside door handle retaining rivet and screw, then disconnect the rod from the handle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the inside door handle.
  16.  
  17. Unfasten the door lock actuator Torx head retaining screws, then remove the actuator.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Push up on the outside lock rod lever and pull on the inside lock handle lever until the lock assembly is in the full open position.
  2.  
  3. Push the lock switch teeth fully towards the actuating arm so the teeth will mesh correctly with the teeth on the lock assembly when installed.
  4.  
  5. Make sure that the actuating arm rubber bumper is on the actuating arm. Install the actuating arm and bumper into the locking lever.
  6.  
  7. Align the lock switch teeth to the gear tooth forkbolt.
  8.  
  9. Secure the lock assembly Torx head retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Manually operate the lock assembly by pushing inward on the fork bolt until it clicks into the fully closed position. The lock must operate to the fully closed position without any interference.
  12.  
  13. Attach the door lock actuator wire harness, then install the actuator and secure with the Torx retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Test the operation of the actuator and door lock switch.
  16.  
  17. Install the door inside handle and lock cylinder.
  18.  
  19. Fasten the lower window run channel.
  20.  
  21. Fasten the door water deflector.
  22.  
  23. Install the seat belt retractor.
  24.  
  25. As outlined earlier in this section, install door trim panel.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.
