Relieving Fuel System Pressure

Print

Whenever any component on the fuel system is in need of service or repair, the entire fuel system must be relieved of pressure. Failure to relieve the fuel pressure before servicing the fuel system can cause severe injury, or even death in the event of a fire or explosion. High pressure fuel spraying from a fitting or hose can atomize instantly, causing the fuel to become highly explosive. Use extreme caution when servicing or repairing any part of the fuel injection system.

WITH FUEL RAIL TEST FITTING

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Loosen the fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank vapor pressure.
  4.
  5. Connect fuel pressure gauge J 34730-1A or equivalent, to the fuel pressure relief valve at the fuel rail. Wrap a shop towel around the fittings while connecting the tool to prevent fuel spillage.
  6.
  7. Install a bleed hose into an approved container, then open the valve to bleed the system pressure. Drain any fuel still in the gauge into an approved container.
  8.
  9. Install the fuel filler cap.
  10.

WITHOUT FUEL RAIL TEST FITTING

  1. Remove the fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank vapor pressure.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  4.
  5. From under the vehicle, detach the fuel pump electrical connector. It should be the only connector coming from the fuel tank.
  6.
  7. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Start the engine and run until the engine stalls. Engage the starter an additional 3 seconds to assure complete relief.
  10.
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.
  13. Attach the fuel pump electrical connector, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.
  15. Install the fuel filler cap.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the negative battery cable, to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine, then continue with fuel system work.
  18.
