REMOVAL & INSTALLATION2.0L Engine



See Figure 1

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air inlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Detach the IAC valve and TPS electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Tag and disconnect the vacuum lines from the throttle body.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the throttle, Throttle Valve (TV) and, if equipped, cruise control cables.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the throttle body assembly and flange gasket. Discard the gasket.
  14.  
  15. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  16.

To install:

Use care when cleaning the old gasket material from machined aluminum surfaces. Sharp tools may cause damage to sealing surfaces.

  1. Install the throttle body assembly with a new flange gasket, then secure using the retaining bolts. Tighten to 10-15 ft. lbs. (14-20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the throttle, TV and cruise control cables.
  4.  

Ensure that the throttle and cruise control linkage does not hold the throttle open.

  1. Connect the vacuum lines as tagged during removal.
  2.  
  3. Attach the TPS and IAC valve electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Install the air inlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, ensure that the movement of the accelerator is free.
  10.  

2.3L Engine See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Partially drain the coolant into a suitable drain pan, to allow the coolant hoses at the throttle body to be removed.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air inlet duct.
  8.  
  9. Detach the IAC valve and TP sensor connectors.
  10.  
  11. Tag and detach all necessary vacuum lines.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect and plug the two coolant hoses.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the accelerator cable bracket retaining nut and bolts, then remove the bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the throttle, Throttle Valve (TV) and cruise control cables.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump brace.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the power brake vacuum hose at the throttle body.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten the throttle body retaining bolts, then remove the throttle body assembly. Remove and discard the gasket.
  24.  
  25. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  26.  

Use care when cleaning the old gasket material from machined aluminum surfaces. Sharp tools may cause damage to sealing surfaces.

To install:
  1. Using a new gasket, position the throttle body on the manifold and tighten the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the power brake vacuum hose to the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump brace.
  6.  
  7. Install the throttle, Throttle Valve (TV) and cruise control cables.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the accelerator cable bracket retaining nut and bolts, then remove the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Connect the two coolant hoses.
  12.  
  13. Connect the vacuum lines.
  14.  
  15. Attach the IAC valve and TP sensor connectors.
  16.  
  17. Install the air inlet duct.
  18.  
  19. Top off the cooling system as necessary.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. For 1990-95 2.3L vehicles you must reset the IAC valve pintle position:
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (engine off).
    2.  
    3. Ground the diagnostic test terminal (ALDL) for five seconds, then remove the ground.
    4.  
    5. Turn the ignition OFF for ten seconds.
    6.  
    7. Start the engine and check for proper idle operation.
    8.

2.4L Engine See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner resonator from the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring from the IAC valve and TP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Label and disconnect all vacuum hoses attached to the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Label and remove the throttle, cruise and transmission control cables.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt and remove the accelerator cable bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the MAP sensor.
  14.  
  15. Unbolt the throttle body and lift the unit from the manifold.
  16.  
  17. Remove all traces of gasket from the throttle body and manifold mating surfaces.
  18.  

The EVAP canister may have released carbon particles which may have caused this parts failure. Check the EVAP canister for carbon before returning to the vehicle to service.

To install:
  1. Place a new gasket into position and set the throttle body on top. Do not install the set bolts at this time.
  2.  
  3. Attach the accelerator cable bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the MAP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Install the throttle body bolts and tighten to 58 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Attach the throttle, cruise and transmission control cables to the throttle body.
  10.  
  11. Install all vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Attach the electrical wiring to the IAC valve and TP sensor.
  14.  
  15. Install the air cleaner resonator to the throttle body.
  16.  

With the engine OFF, check to see that the accelerator pedal is free, by depressing the pedal to the floor and releasing.

  1. Connect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Reset the IAC valve pintle position:
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position with the engine OFF .
    2.  
    3. Turn the ignition OFF for ten seconds.
    4.  
    5. Start the engine and check for proper idle operation.
    6.

3.0L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Partially drain the cooling system to allow the coolant hoses at the throttle body to be removed.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air inlet duct at the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Detach the TPS and IAC valve electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Tag and disconnect the vacuum lines from the throttle body.
  10.  
  11. Detach and plug the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the throttle, Throttle Valve (TV) and cruise control cables.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the throttle body attaching bolts, then remove the throttle body assembly and flange gasket. Discard the gasket.
  16.  

To install:

Use care in the cleaning of old gasket material from machined aluminum surfaces. Sharp tools may cause damage to sealing surfaces.

  1. Install the throttle body assembly with a new flange gasket, then secure using the attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the throttle, TV and cruise cables.
  4.  

Ensure that the throttle and cruise control linkage does not hold the throttle open.

  1. Attach the coolant hoses to the throttle body.
  2.  
  3. Connect the vacuum lines as tagged during removal.
  4.  
  5. Attach the TPS and IAC valve electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Connect the air inlet duct to the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Refill the radiator.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, ensure that the movement of the accelerator is free.
  14.  

3.1L Engine See Figure 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air inlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Detach the IAC valve and the TP sensor electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the throttle and cruise control cables.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the accelerator cable bracket bolts, then remove the bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine coolant pipe nut to gain access to the throttle body attaching stud.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the throttle body retaining nut/stud, then remove the throttle body assembly. Remove and discard the flange gasket.
  16.  
  17. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  18.  


CAUTION
Be careful when cleaning the mating surfaces because sharp tools may scratch and/or damage the sealing surfaces.

To install:
  1. Position a new flange gasket, then install the throttle body assembly and secure with the retaining bolt/stud. Tighten to 18-21 ft. lbs. (25-28 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Fasten the coolant pipe nut, then install the accelerator cable bracket.
  4.  
  5. Connect the throttle and cruise control cables.
  6.  

Make sure the throttle and cruise control linkage does not hold the throttle open.

  1. Attach the TP sensor and IAC valve electrical connectors.
  2.  
  3. Install the air inlet duct, then connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. With the engine OFF , check to make sure the accelerator pedal if free by depressing it to the floor, then releasing it.

3.3L Engine See Figure 6

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Partially drain the cooling system to allow for removal of the coolant hose at the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner and related duct work for clearance.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the vacuum harness attaching screw from the throttle cable bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the throttle, Throttle Valve (TV) and cruise control cables.
  12.  
  13. Tag and disconnect the necessary vacuum lines from the throttle body.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the IAC valve, TP sensor and MAF sensor electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Remove the coolant hose from the throttle body.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the nuts/bolts securing the throttle body to the intake manifold, then remove the throttle body assembly and flange gasket. Discard the gasket.
  20.  

Use care in the cleaning of old gasket material from machined aluminum surfaces. Sharp tools may cause damage to sealing surfaces.

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Using a new gasket, install the throttle body assembly and secure using the retaining nuts/bolts. Tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the coolant hose to the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Connect the throttle, TV and cruise cables.
  6.  

Ensure that the throttle and cruise control linkage does not hold the throttle open.

  1. Connect the vacuum lines as tagged during removal.
  2.  
  3. Attach the TPS and IAC valve electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Install the vacuum harness attaching screw. Tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the air inlet duct to the throttle body. Install the air cleaner and duct work.
  8.  
  9. Refill the radiator, then connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, ensure that the movement of the accelerator is free.
  12.  
  13. Reset the IAC valve pintle position by turning the ignition ON , then OFF . Start the engine and check for proper idle operation.
  14.
