CAUTION
Some models covered by this information may be equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SIR components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SIR, as described in Chassis Electrical .

  1. If equipped, disable the SIR system and/or disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel sound insulator, trim pad and steering column trim collar.
  4.  
  5. Straighten the steering wheel so the tires are pointing straight ahead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the plastic wire protector from under the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the turn signal switch.
  12.  
  13. To disassemble the top of the column:
    1. Remove the shaft lock cover.
    2.  
    3. If equipped with telescope steering, remove the first set of spacers, bumper, second set of spacers and carrier snapring retainer.
    4.  
    5. Depress the lock plate with the proper depressing tool and remove the retaining ring from its groove.
    6.  
    7. Remove the tool, retaining ring, lockplate, canceling cam and spring.
    8.

  15. Remove the 3 screws and pull the turn signal switch out from its mount as far as possible.
  16.  
  17. Place the key in the RUN position and use a thin prytool to remove the buzzer switch.
  18.  
  19. Remove the key lock cylinder attaching screw and remove the lock cylinder.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the key lock cylinder and place in the RUN position. Install the buzzer switch and key light.
  2.  
  3. Install the turn signal switch and lever.
  4.  
  5. To assemble the top end of the column:
    1. Install the spring, canceling cam, lock plate and retaining ring on the steering shaft.
    2.  
    3. Depress the plate with the depressing tool and install the ring securely in the groove. Remove the tool slowly.
    4.  
    5. If equipped with telescope steering, install the carrier snapring retainer, lower set of spacers, bumper and upper set of spacers.
    6.  
    7. Install the shaft lock cover.
    8.

  7. Attach the turn signal switch connector, then install the wire protector.
  8.  
  9. As outlined earlier, install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering column trim collar, lower instrument panel trim pad and sound insulator.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check the key lock cylinder and turn signal switch for proper operation.

1992-98 Vehicles
With Key

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the AIR BAG fuse.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side insulator panel.
  6.  
  7. Disengage the two yellow 2-way SIR connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tilt lever, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers.
  12.  
  13. Insert the key in the lock and turn it to the ON position.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lock cylinder by pushing against the locking button on the back of the bearing/housing assembly, and pulling outward.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install he new lock cylinder into the housing. Gently push the lock cylinder into place while rotating counterclockwise.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper and lower column covers.
  4.  
  5. Install the tilt lever, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Engage the two yellow 2-way SIR connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the left side insulator panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the AIR BAG fuse.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Without Key (Key Lost or Key Code Unavailable)

CAUTION
Some models covered by this information may be equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SIR components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SIR, as described in Chassis Electrical .

The steering column must be removed from the vehicle to replace the lock cylinder.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and disable the SIR system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left side insulator panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column filler panel.
  6.  
  7. Disengage the two yellow 2-way SIR connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the tilt lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers.
  14.  
  15. Disengage the PASSLOCK connector from the lock cylinder.
  16.  
  17. Disengage the headlamp switch and windshield wiper switch connectors.
  18.  
  19. Detach the transaxle shift interlock cable from the lock cylinder.
  20.  
  21. Remove the upper flexible column bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the steering column bracket support bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column from the vehicle, and place it on a suitable work surface.
  26.  
  27. Using a 9 /32 drill bit, drill into the lock cylinder housing as shown in the illustration.
  28.  
  29. Insert special tool J 41253 into the hole and twist it to remove the retainer spring.
  30.  
  31. Hold the steering column vertical and tap on the housing assembly to dislodge the lock retainer and clear the metal shavings.
  32.  

If necessary, use needlenose pliers to remove the retainer from the housing assembly.

  1. Clean all debris and shavings from the housing assembly.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the new lock cylinder onto the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Install the key in the cylinder and turn it to the ON position.
  4.  
  5. Align the locking tab with the slot in the housing assembly, and push the cylinder into position.
  6.  
  7. Place the steering column into the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column bracket support bolts and tighten them to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the upper flexible column bolt (pinch bolt) and tighten it to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the transaxle shift interlock cable.
  14.  
  15. Connect the headlamp and windshield wiper switch electrical connections.
  16.  
  17. Engage the PASSLOCK connector.
  18.  
  19. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  20.  
  21. Install the tilt lever (if equipped).
  22.  
  23. Install the steering wheel.
  24.  
  25. Engage the two yellow 2-way SIR electrical connectors.
  26.  
  27. Install the steering column filler panel.
  28.  
  29. Install the left side insulator panel.
  30.  
  31. Install the AIR BAG fuse.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
