Fig. Fig. 1: Removing the throttle body assembly-1991 2.5L engine shown

This procedure covers removal and installation of the entire throttle body assembly, including the fuel meter body. If you only need to remove the fuel meter body, refer to the following procedure.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.
  7. Tag and detach the electrical connectors for the idle speed control motor/idle air control valve, the throttle position sensor, fuel injectors and any other component necessary in order to remove the throttle body.
  8.
  9. Unfasten the grommet with the wires from the throttle body.
  10.
  11. Remove the throttle return spring, cruise control, throttle linkage and downshift cable.
  12.
  13. Tag and disconnect all necessary vacuum lines, the fuel inlet line, fuel return line, brake booster line, MAP sensor hose and the AIR hose. Be sure to use a back-up wrench on all metal lines. Remove and discard the fuel line O-rings.
  14.
  15. Remove the PCV, EVAP and/or EGR hoses from the front of the throttle body.
  16.
  17. Unfasten the throttle body mounting screws/bolts, then remove the throttle body and flange gasket. Discard the gasket.
  18.

To install:
  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the throttle body and the manifold.
  2.
  3. Using a new gasket, install the throttle body to the manifold. Tighten the throttle body retaining screws to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and fuel lines to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Always use new gaskets and O-rings.
  4.
  5. Install the PCV, EVAP and/or EGR hoses from the front of the throttle body.
  6.
  7. Connect all necessary vacuum lines, the fuel inlet line, fuel return line, brake booster line, MAP sensor hose and the AIR hose. Be sure to use a back-up wrench on all metal lines.
  8.
  9. Connect the throttle return spring, cruise control, throttle linkage and downshift cable.
  10.
  11. Fasten the grommet with the wires to the throttle body.
  12.
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
  17. Reset the IAC by depressing the accelerator slightly, run engine for 3-4 seconds and turn ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  18.

Make certain cruise and shift cables do not hold the throttle above the idle stop.
