Fig. Fig. 1: Accumulator mounting-1995 vehicle shown

  1. Have the system properly discharged by a repair shop with an approved recovery/recycling system.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.
  7. Loosen the tube assembly-to-side rail mounting clip bolt.
  8.
  9. Disconnect and cap the inlet and outlet pipes from the accumulator. Discard the O-rings.
  10.
  11. Remove the retaining strap and bolts, then remove the accumulator.
  12.

To install:
  1. Position the accumulator and secure with the retaining strap and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 36 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  2.
  3. Lubricate new O-rings with clean refrigerant oil, then install on the inlet and outlet pipes. Connect the pipes to the accumulator and tighten the fittings, using a back-up wrench to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  4.
  5. Fasten the tube clip-to-side rail bolt and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
  9. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly.
  10.
  11. Have a reputable repair shop evacuate, charge and leak test the A/C system, using the correct equipment.

1991-95 3.8L Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Have the system properly discharged by a repair shop with an approved recovery/recycling system.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the low-pressure lines at the inlet and outlet fittings on the accumulator. Discard the O-ring seals.
  8.

Cap the refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant.

  1. Detach the pressure cycling switch connection and remove the switch, as required.
  2.
  3. Loosen the lower strap/clamp bolt and spread the strap or clamp, as applicable. Turn the accumulator and remove.
  4.
  5. Drain and measure the oil in the accumulator. Discard the old oil.
  6.

To install:
  1. Add new oil equivalent to the amount drained from the old accumulator. Add an additional 2-3 oz. (60-90ml) of oil to compensate for the oil retained by the accumulator desiccant.
  2.
  3. Position the accumulator in the securing bracket and secure with the clamp bolt. Tighten the clamp bolt to 36 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the pressure switch and attach the electrical connection. Tighten the switch to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  6.
  7. Lubricate new O-rings with clean refrigerant oil, then install on the low pressure lines.
  8.
  9. Attach the low-pressure inlet and outlet lines. Using a back-up wrench, tighten the line fittings to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly.
  14.
  15. Have a reputable repair shop evacuate, charge and leak test the A/C system, using the correct equipment.
