Fig. Fig. 5: Compressor and bracket mounting-1993 3.1L engine shown

  1. Have the system properly discharged by a repair shop with an approved recovery/recycling system.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. For 3.8L engines, detach the right engine cooling fan electrical connector and remove the fan.
  6.
  7. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
  8.
  9. Remove the serpentine belt, as outlined in Routine Maintenance .
  10.
  11. If necessary for access to the compressor, perform the following:
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.
    3. Remove the right engine splash shield.
    4.
    5. Remove the engine harness retainer near the radiator.
    6.

  12.
  13. Disconnect the refrigerant hose assembly from the compressor. Discard the O-rings.
  14.

Cap the refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant.

  1. Detach the electrical connections from the compressor.
  2.
  3. Unfasten the front and rear compressor mounting bolts, then remove the compressor. If necessary, remove the compressor mounting brace.
  4.
  5. Drain and measure the refrigerant oil from the compressor. Discard the old oil.
  6.

To install:
  1. If the compressor is to be replaced, drain the oil from the new compressor and discard. Add new refrigerant oil equivalent to the amount drained from the old compressor.
  2.
  3. If removed, install the bracket and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 67 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  4.
  5. Position the compressor and install the attaching bolts. Tighten the front bolts to 36-43 ft. lbs. (47-58 Nm) and the rear bolts to 18-23 ft. lbs. (25-31 Nm).
  6.
  7. Attach the compressor electrical connectors.
  8.
  9. Lubricate new O-rings with clean refrigerant oil, then install on the compressor refrigerant line fittings. Connect the compressor refrigerant lines.
  10.
  11. If removed, perform the following:
    1. Install the engine harness retainer near the radiator.
    2.
    3. Install the splash shield and the tire and wheel assembly.
    4.
    5. Carefully lower the vehicle.
    6.

  12.
  13. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.
  14.
  15. For 3.8L engines, install the right side cooling fan and attach the electrical connector.
  16.
  17. Install the serpentine belt.
  18.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
  21. Have a reputable repair shop evacuate, charge and leak test the A/C system, using the correct equipment.
