1988-94 Vehicles
EXCEPT 1992-94 3.4L AND 3.8L ENGINES
  1. Have the system properly discharged by a repair shop with an approved recovery/recycling system.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly and duct.
  6.
  7. If necessary for access, remove the coolant recovery reservoir
  8.
  9. Unfasten the engine strut brace bolts from the upper tie bar, then rotate the strut(s) and brace(s) rearward. In order to prevent shearing of the rubber bushing(s), loosen the bolt(s) on the engine strut(s) before swinging the strut(s).
  10.
  11. Remove the air intake resonator mounting nut, as required.
  12.
  13. Disconnect and cap the condenser refrigerant lines. Discard the O-rings.
  14.

Use a backup wrench on the condenser fittings when removing the high-pressure and liquid lines. Make sure to cap the refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant.

  1. Remove the upper radiator mounting panel bolts and clamps.
  2.
  3. Detach the electrical connector from fan(s).
  4.
  5. Remove the upper radiator mounting panel with the cooling fan(s) attached.
  6.
  7. Tilt the radiator rearward and hold, then remove the condenser from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:
  1. Install the condenser.
  2.
  3. Install the upper radiator mounting panel with the fan(s) attached.
  4.
  5. Attach the cooling fan(s) electrical connector(s).
  6.
  7. Install the upper radiator mounting panel bolts and clamps.
  8.
  9. Lubricate new O-rings with clean refrigerant oil, then install on the condenser refrigerant lines.
  10.
  11. Connect the condenser refrigerant lines.
  12.

Use a backup wrench on the condenser fittings when tightening lines.

  1. If removed, install the air intake resonator mounting nut.
  2.
  3. If removed, install the coolant recovery reservoir.
  4.
  5. Swing the engine strut(s) into position and tighten the retaining bolts. For details, please refer to the procedure in Engine & Engine Overhaul of this repair guide.
  6.
  7. Install the air cleaner assembly and duct.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
  11. Have a reputable repair shop evacuate, charge and leak test the A/C system, using the correct equipment.
