Reverse/Neutral Safety Switch

The Neutral Safety Switch and Back-up light switch is combined as one unit.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Apply the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Place the transaxle in the N position.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the switch electrical connector and remove the retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle and remove the vacuum hoses and electrical connectors from the cruise control servo, if so equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shift lever at the transaxle. Do NOT disconnect the lever from the cable. Remove the two retaining bolts and switch.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Align the notch (groove) on the inner sleeve with the notch on the switch body. Install the switch and tighten the retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the shift lever and tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Engage the switch connector, harness clips and lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the cruise control servo, if removed.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
  12.  

ADJUSTMENT

Replacement switches are pinned in the Neutral position to ease installation. If the switch has been rotated or the switch is broken, adjustment may be performed as follows.

  1. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Place the shift control lever in N .
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the switch mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the switch on the shifter to align the service adjustment hole with the carrier tang hole.
  10.  
  11. Insert a small drill bit into the adjustment holes to align the switch. Tighten the mounting screws to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Verify proper switch operation for gear start selection and back-up light operation.
