  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shift control and throttle valve (TV) cables at the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the throttle cable bracket and brake booster hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine torque struts, left torque strut bracket and oil cooler lines at the transaxle.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine support fixture tool J28467-A and J-36462.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front wheels, splash shields, calipers and rotors. Support the caliper to the frame with wire.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front halfshafts (axle) assemblies as outlined in this section.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect both ball joints and tie rod ends from the strut assemblies. For further assistance, refer to Suspension & Steering .
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine oil filter.
  20.  
  21. Remove the A/C compressor and support out of the way. Do NOT disconnect the refrigerant lines.
  22.  
  23. Remove the rack and pinion heat shield and electrical connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rack and pinion assembly and secure it to the exhaust for support.
  26.  
  27. Remove the power steering hoses bracket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine and transaxle mounts at the frame.
  30.  
  31. Support the frame with jackstands at each end, remove the frame bolts and frame. Refer to the Frame removal and installation procedure in this section.
  32.  
  33. Remove the torque converter cover.
  34.  
  35. Turn the crankshaft to expose the converter bolts. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  36.  
  37. Remove the starter bolts and support out of the way.
  38.  
  39. Remove the ground cable from the transaxle case.
  40.  
  41. Remove the fluid fill tube bolt and transaxle mount bracket.
  42.  
  43. Lower the vehicle.
  44.  
  45. Remove the fill tube.
  46.  
  47. Using the engine support fixture, lower the left side of the engine about 4 in. (102mm).
  48.  
  49. Raise the vehicle, support with jackstands and install a transaxle jack.
  50.  
  51. Remove the transaxle-to-engine bolts and transaxle.
  52.  

To install:
  1. The transaxle oil cooler lines should be flushed with a converter flush kit J-35944 or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with chassis grease. Make sure the torque converter is properly seated in the oil pump drive. Damage to the transaxle may occur if converter is not seated completely.
  4.  
  5. Position the transaxle into the vehicle and tighten the transaxle-to-engine bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the transaxle mount bracket and lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Using the engine support fixture, raise the engine into the proper position.
  10.  
  11. Install the fluid fill tube.
  12.  
  13. With an assistant, position and support the frame under the vehicle. Install the frame bolts and tighten to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove the frame supports and lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Position the engine and transaxle into the frame mounts. Remove the engine support fixture.
  18.  
  19. Raise the vehicle, install the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). Install the torque converter cover.
  20.  
  21. Install the starter motor and transaxle ground cable.
  22.  
  23. Install the ball joints and tie rods.
  24.  
  25. Install the halfshaft (axle) assemblies, rotors and calipers.
  26.  
  27. Install the rack and pinion, lines, and heat shields.
  28.  
  29. Install the A/C compressor.
  30.  
  31. Install the engine oil filter and refill to the proper level.
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Install the throttle cable bracket, torque strut bracket and torque strut.
  36.  
  37. Install the transaxle oil cooler lines to the transaxle.
  38.  
  39. Install the shift control and TV cables.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable, install the air cleaner and recheck each operation to ensure completion of repair.
  42.  
  43. Adjust the shift linkage and TV cable. Check the engine and transaxle oil levels.
  44.  
  45. Start the engine and check for fluid leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Instlal the engine support fixture tool J28467-A and J-36462.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shift control and Throttle Valve (TV) cables at the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the throttle cable bracket and brake booster hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crossover pipe-to-left exhaust manifold, EGR tube at crossover and crossover-to-exhaust pipe bolts.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the crossover-to-right manifold and swing the crossover upward to gain clearance to the top bell housing bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the four upper bell housing bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the TCC electrical connector, neutral start switch electrical connector and vacuum modulator hose at the transaxle.
  16.  
  17. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  18.  
  19. Remove the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front wheels, splash shields, calipers and rotors. Support the caliper to the frame with wire.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front halfshafts (axle) assemblies as outlined in this section.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect both ball joints and tie rod ends from the strut assemblies. For further assistance, refer to Suspension & Steering .

  33. Remove the engine and transaxle mounts at the frame.

  35. Support the frame with jackstands at each end, remove the frame bolts and frame. Refer to the Frame removal and installation procedure in this section.

  37. Remove the torque converter cover and bolts.
  38.  
  39. Remove the transaxle oil cooler lines, support bracket and torque converter cover.
  40.  
  41. Remove the starter bolts and support it out of the way.
  42.  
  43. Remove the ground cable from the transaxle case.
  44.  
  45. Support the transaxle with jackstands.
  46.  
  47. Remove the fluid fill tube bolt and transaxle mount bracket.
  48.  
  49. Remove the transaxle-to-engine bolts and transaxle.
  50.  

To install:

WARNING
Make sure the torque converter is properly seated in the oil pump drive. Damage to the transaxle may occur if converter is not seated completely.

  1. Position the transaxle into the vehicle and tighten the transaxle-to-engine bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle mount bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the starter motor, halfshafts (axles) and torque converter cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the oil cooler lines and support bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the frame assembly and retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower engine mount retaining nuts and upper transaxle mount retaining nuts.
  14.  
  15. Install the ball joints-to-steering knuckle and rack and pinion assembly-to-frame.
  16.  
  17. Install the power steering heat shield and cooler lines-to-frame.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel house splash shields.
  20.  
  21. Install the rotor, calipers and front wheels.
  22.  
  23. Install the vehicle speed sensor and lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Connect the back-up/neutral switch.
  26.  
  27. Engage the modulator hose and TCC electrical connector.
  28.  
  29. Install the four upper bell housing bolts and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the crossover pipe to its proper position.
  32.  
  33. Install the crossover pipe-to-right and left manifolds.
  34.  
  35. Install the EGR tube-to-crossover.
  36.  
  37. Connect the TV and shift control cables.
  38.  
  39. Remove the engine support fixture J28467-A and J-36462.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable and install the air cleaner.
  42.  
  43. Adjust the fluid level, TV and shift cables.
  44.  
  45. Recheck all procedures for completion of repair. Start the engine and check for fluid leaks.
