Brake Light Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988-92 Vehicles

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the three fasteners from the left side insulator panel.
  4.  
  5. Slide the steering shaft protective cover towards the cowl.
  6.  
  7. Remove the vacuum hose at the cruise control cut OFF switch, if so equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stoplamp switch-to-steering column bracket retaining pin.
  10.  
  11. Unplug the electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Push the switch arm to the left and towards the cowl to disconnect switch-to-pedal arm. Release the snap clip and remove the switch.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the switch and push up until it is seated into the top snap clip.
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Connect the switch to the pedal.
  6.  
  7. Install the switch-to-steering column retaining pin.
  8.  
  9. Connect the vacuum hose if equipped with cruise control.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering shaft protective sleeve.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the stoplamp switch.
  14.  
  15. Install the left sound insulator, connect the negative battery cable and check switch operation.

1993-96 Vehicles

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. -96 vehicles, remove the driver's side instrument panel sound insulator panel.
  2.  
  3. Detach the switch electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the switch from the brake pedal bracket.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Position the switch to the brake pedal bracket.
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the driver's side instrument panel sound insulator panel.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

ADJUSTMENT

  1. Depress the brake pedal (push down), as far as possible and hold.
  2.  
  3. Using a stiff wire with a hooked end, gently pull the switch set lever forward (toward the front of the vehicle), and listen for an audible click that indicates release of the automatic adjuster.
  4.  

If no click is heard, release the brake pedal and repeat the above procedure.

  1. After release of the automatic adjuster, slowly pull the brake pedal all the way rearward. Listen for the switch to ratchet into the set position (setting the brake light switch). At least three clicks of the ratchet should be heard.

  3. Inspect the operation of the brake lights, as follows:
    1. The brake lights should light at maximum brake pedal travel of 1 1 / 4 in. (32mm) and throughout the remainder of the pedal travel.

    3. If the brake lights do not light, repeat the switch adjuster procedure one more time.

1993-96 Vehicles

With the brake pedal in the fully released position, the brake light plunger should be fully depressed against the brake pedal switch.

  1. Insert the brake light switch into the brake pedal bracket.
  2.  
  3. Push the brake pedal forward to set the brake pushrod into the booster.
  4.  
  5. Pull the brake pedal to the rear, against the internal pedal stop. The brake light switch will be adjusted.
  6.  
  7. Check the brake lights for proper operation.
