OPERATION



The Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor provides a signal through the ignition module which the ECM uses as a reference to calculate rpm and crankshaft position.

  1. Perform a visual inspection.
  2.  
  3. Detach the sensor connector and install jumper wires from the power and ground terminals of the sensor connector to the wiring harness. This permits the sensor to receive power and ground without signaling the ignition system during inspection.
  4.  

Do not connect a jumper wire to the signal terminal on the sensor. This will cause the engine to start. Use extreme caution when performing this test.

  1. Using a multimeter set to the volts setting, check the voltage between the power and ground wires. This voltage may be either 4, 6, 8 or 12 volts depending on the system. Take note of this voltage reading.
  2.  
  3. Connect the multimeter between the signal terminal and the ground wire. Rotate the engine (by tapping the ignition key) with the starter motor. When the engine is rotated, the signal should fluctuate between 0 volts and the system voltage noted in the earlier step.
  4.  
  5. While rotating the engine, check for damaged shutter blades or any indication that the shutter blades are hitting the magnet.
  6.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the sensor harness connector from the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the sensor retaining bolts, then remove the sensor from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the sensor O-ring for damage, and replace, if necessary.
  8.  

To install:
  1. If necessary, lubricate a new O-ring with clean engine oil and install on the sensor. Install the sensor into the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the sensor retaining bolt. Tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the sensor harness connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the DIS assembly, as outlined in Engine Electrical of this repair guide.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor retaining screws and remove the sensor from DIS assembly.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the sensor O-ring for damage, and replace, if necessary.
  8.  

To install:
  1. If necessary, lubricate a new O-ring with clean engine oil and install on the sensor.
  2.  
  3. Fit the sensor to the DIS assembly and install the retaining screws. Tighten the retaining screws to 20 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the DIS assembly to the engine, as outlined in Engine Electrical of this repair guide.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

3.1L (VIN M) Engines
3X CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Turn the steering wheel to the full left position.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Detach the sensor harness connector from the sensor.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the sensor retaining bolts, then remove the sensor from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the sensor O-ring for damage, and replace, if necessary.
  12.  

To install:
  1. If necessary, lubricate a new O-ring with clean engine oil and install on the sensor. Install the sensor into the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the sensor retaining bolt. Tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the sensor harness connector.
  6.  
  7. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position, then connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

24X CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. If necessary for access, remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer using tool J 24420-B.
  10.  
  11. Detach the sensor electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the sensor retaining bolts, then remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the CKP sensor and secure using the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the balancer on the crankshaft using special tool J 29113, or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Apply thread sealer 1052080 or equivalent to the bolt threads of the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If removed, install the inner fender shield and the right front wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the serpentine belt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

1994-96 3.4L Engine
3X CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intermediate exhaust pipe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rack and pinion heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator cooling duct.
  10.  
  11. Detach the sensor electric connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 3X CKP sensor from the engine.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the sensor O-ring for damage, and replace, if necessary.
  16.  

To install:
  1. If necessary, lubricate a new O-ring with clean engine oil and install on the sensor. Install the sensor into the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the sensor-to-block bolt and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the alternator cooling duct.
  8.  
  9. Install the rack and pinion heat shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the intermediate exhaust pipe.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

24X CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer using tool J 38197, or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Detach the sensor electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the sensor retaining bolts, then remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the CKP sensor and secure using the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Apply thread sealer 1052080 or equivalent to the bolt threads of the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If removed, install the inner fender shield and the right front wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the serpentine belt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
  8.  
  9. Using a 28mm socket, unfasten the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer using tool J 38197, or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Remove the CKP sensor shield. Do NOT use a prybar to remove the shield!
  12.  
  13. Detach the sensor electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the sensor retaining bolts, then remove the sensor from the block face.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the CKP sensor to the block face, then secure using the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the CKP sensor shield.
  4.  
  5. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Apply thread sealer 1052080 or equivalent to the bolt threads of the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76ºturn.
  10.  
  11. Install the inner fender shield and the right front wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the serpentine belt.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
