Print

OPERATION

The VSS is located on the transmission and sends a pulsing voltage signal to the ECM which is converted to vehicle speed. This sensor mainly controls the operation of the TCC system, shift light, cruise control and activation of the EGR system.

TESTING

CAUTION
The following test will require the vehicle to be raised OFF the ground, with the engine running and the transmission in D. Extreme caution must be used when raising and supporting the vehicle, otherwise personal and/or vehicle damage may occur.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Detach the VSS wire connector located on the transmission housing.
  4.
  5. Connect an ohmmeter between the terminals of the speed sensor. Most sensors will usually be between 190-250 ohms.
  6.
  7. Place the vehicle in Drive and allow the wheels to rotate. The ohmmeter should fluctuate. If it does not, or the ohmmeter reading is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.
  9. Apply the brake, place the vehicle in park, then turn the ignition OFF .
  10.
  11. Attach the harness connector to the VSS.
  12.
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Detach the electrical connector from the VSS, then remove the sensor.
  6.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  8.
