REMOVAL& INSTALLATION



2.2L Engine
ENGINE MOUNT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner duct assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine torque struts, as outlined later in this section.
  6.  
  7. Support the engine using tools J 28467-A, J 28467-90, J 35953 and J 36462 or their equivalents.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine mount-to-chassis nuts.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Raise the engine by cranking the special tool wing nut.
  16.  
  17. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the upper engine mount-to bracket nuts, then remove the engine mount.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Position the engine mount, then secure with the mount-to-bracket nuts. Tighten the nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower the vehicle, then lower the engine.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine mount-to-chassis nuts, then tighten the nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine support tools.
  12.  
  13. Install the engine torque struts and secure with the retaining nuts.
  14.  
  15. Install the air cleaner duct assembly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

ENGINE BRACKET

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine mount, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the A/C compressor.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the front and rear engine mounting bracket bolts, then remove the bracket from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. For vehicles without A/C, install the engine mounting bracket to the engine, as follows:
    1. Position the spacer to the engine and align the engine mount bracket to the spacer.
    2.  
    3. Slide the engine mount bracket up and align the remaining holes of the bracket to the engine and spacer.
    4.

  3. For vehicles equipped with A/C, install the engine mounting bracket to the engine, as follows:
    1. Position the engine mount bracket to the A/C bracket, then loosely install the rear bolt.
    2.  
    3. Slide the remaining mount bracket up and align the remaining holes of the bracket to the engine and A/C bracket.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Hand start the remaining bolts. Tighten the front bolts (either spacer or A/C bracket) first, then tighten the rear bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  6.  
  7. If equipped, install the A/C compressor.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine mount, as outlined earlier in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

TORQUE STRUT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the torque strut-to-engine bracket bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the torque strut-to-upper tie bar bracket bolt and nut, then remove the torque strut from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the rubber in the torque strut for hardness, splitting and/or cracking, and replace if necessary.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the torque strut, then install the torque strut-to-upper tie bar bracket bolt and nut.
  2.  
  3. Install the torque strut-to-engine bracket bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

ENGINE MOUNT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the engine to provide clearance using tool J 28467 or equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the vacuum lines and pull the vacuum harness back through the front lift bracket.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the mount retaining nuts from below the frame mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the mount-to-engine nuts, then remove the mount from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Position the engine mount and secure with the mount-to-bracket nuts.
  2.  
  3. Route the vacuum lines through the front lift bracket and reconnect.
  4.  
  5. Carefully lower the engine. Remove the lifting tool.
  6.  
  7. Install the mount retaining nuts.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

TORQUE STRUT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the torque strut-to-engine bracket bolt.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the torque strut bolt from the body mount, then remove the torque strut.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Position the torque strut, then install the torque strut bolt to the body mount.
  2.  
  3. Install the torque strut-to-engine bracket bolt.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

2.5L Engine
ENGINE MOUNT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner duct assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine torque strut nuts, bolts and torque struts.
  6.  
  7. Support the engine using J 28467-A, J 28467-90, J 35953 and J 36462 or their equivalents.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine mount-to-frame nuts.
  14.  
  15. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Raise the engine by turning J 28467-A wing nut clockwise.
  18.  
  19. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the engine mount-to-engine bracket upper nuts, then remove the engine mount.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the mount, then install the engine mount-to-engine bracket upper nuts. Tighten the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Lower the engine and mount onto the frame.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine mount-to-frame nuts. Tighten the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the right engine splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the engine support tools.
  16.  
  17. Install the engine torque strut and secure with the retaining bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the air cleaner duct assembly.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

TORQUE STRUT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the engine torque strut nuts and bolt, then remove the torque struts from the vehicle.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the engine torque strut and secure with the retaining bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  

2.8L and 3.1L Engines
1988-93 VEHICLES

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the mounting nuts from the bottom of the frame.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transaxle mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Raise the engine slightly to provide clearance with tools J 28467-A and J 36462 or equivalent. Remove the engine mount-to-bracket nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine mount.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the engine mount, the install the mount-to-engine mount bracket.
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower the engine.
  4.  
  5. Install the mount retaining nuts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the transaxle mount nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine lifting fixtures.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1994-96 VEHICLES

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. With the help of an assistant, remove the hood panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine mount strut brackets, as follows:
    1. Unfasten the retaining nuts from the engine mount strut.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolts/screws from the engine mount strut bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the strut.
    6.  
    7. If equipped, unfasten the horizontal bolts/screws through the A/C compressor and bracket from the block.
    8.  
    9. Remove the vertical bolt/screw from the bracket, then remove the bracket.
    10.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the electric engine cooling fan.
  8.  
  9. Install engine support tools, J 28467-A, J 36462, J 28467-90 and J 35953 or their equivalents.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt/screw and move the cover aside.
  16.  
  17. Properly drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine splash shield.
  20.  
  21. Safely support the frame with jackstands.
  22.  
  23. Remove the transaxle mount frame side bracket nuts from the frame.
  24.  
  25. Remove the retaining nuts.
  26.  
  27. Unfasten the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts/screws, then remove the lower drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine mount nuts from the engine mount bracket, then remove the engine mount.
  30.  
  31. Remove the engine mount bracket.
  32.  

To install:
  1. Position the bracket to the oil pan. Install the bolt/screw and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Position the engine mount to the mount bracket. Install the engine mount retaining nuts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the frame with jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts/screws.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the nuts to the frame. Tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the transaxle mount frame side bracket nuts to the frame.
  12.  
  13. Remove the jackstands from the frame.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine splash shield.
  16.  
  17. Position the intermediate steering shaft cover and secure with the retaining bolt/screw.
  18.  
  19. Attach the front exhaust manifold pipe.
  20.  
  21. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the engine support tools.
  24.  
  25. Install the electric cooling fan.
  26.  
  27. Install the engine mount strut bracket and strut, as follows:
    1. Position the bracket cover the pin locator.
    2.  
    3. Install the vertical bolt/screw through the bracket to the head. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    4.  
    5. If equipped, install the horizontal bolts/screws through the A/C compressor and bracket to block.
    6.  
    7. Position the strut to the engine mount strut bracket.
    8.  
    9. Install the bolt/screw to the engine mount strut bracket.
    10.  
    11. Hand-start the retaining nuts, then tighten the nuts, using a back-up wrench, to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    12.

  29. With the help of an assistant install the hood.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable, then fill the crankcase with the correct viscosity and amount of engine oil.
  32.  

3.4L Engine
FRONT (LEFT) MOUNT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If necessary for access, remove the hood, with the help of an assistant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine torque strut.
  8.  
  9. If necessary, remove the electric engine cooling fan.
  10.  
  11. Position engine support tools J-284678-A, J-28647-90, and J-36462 or equivalents, to support engine.
  12.  
  13. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove right front engine splash shield and halfshaft splash shield.
  18.  
  19. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container, then remove engine oil filter.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the engine mount nuts at frame and the bracket.
  22.  
  23. Install a suitable drive axle boot protector.
  24.  
  25. Carefully raise the engine. Remove the front engine mount.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Install mount in place and lower the vehicle and the engine. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive axle boot protector.
  4.  
  5. Install engine mount nuts at the bracket and the frame. Tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install oil filter and right front splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Install right front wheel assembly, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. If removed, install the electric cooling fan assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove engine the support fixtures.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine torque strut and the air cleaner assembly, then connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. If removed, install the hood assembly with the help of an assistant.
  18.  

REAR MOUNT
  1. If necessary for access, remove the hood with the help of an assistant.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine torque strut.
  8.  
  9. J-284678-A, J-28647-90, and J-36462 or equivalents, to support engine.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove right front tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove right front engine splash shield and halfshaft splash shield.
  16.  
  17. Install a suitable drive axle boot protector.
  18.  
  19. Remove engine oil filter.
  20.  
  21. Remove engine mount nuts on frame.
  22.  
  23. Raise engine. Remove rack and pinion mounting bolts and secure to frame.
  24.  
  25. Remove right ball joint at control arm. Install support under right side of frame.
  26.  
  27. Remove right frame mounting bolts, loosen left side frame mounting bolts and lower right side of frame 2-3 in. (51-76mm).
  28.  
  29. Install halfshaft boot protector. Remove upper engine mount nuts at mount. Remove mount.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Position the mount in place.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper engine mount nuts at mount.
  4.  
  5. Install the halfshaft splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Raise right side frame. Install and tighten the right side frame and left frame mounting bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install right side ball joint and rack and pinion assembly.
  10.  
  11. Lower engine into position.
  12.  
  13. Install engine mount nuts at frame, tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the oil filter and right front splash shield. Remove the halfshaft boot protector.
  16.  
  17. Install the right front wheel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle and remove engine supports.
  20.  
  21. Install engine torque strut, air cleaner assembly and connect the negative battery cable.
  22.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If necessary for access, raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the mount retaining nuts from below the frame mounting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Raise the engine slightly to provide clearance and remove the engine mount-to-bracket nuts using engine support and lifting fixtures J-28467_A, J28467-90 and J-35953 or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the engine mount nuts, then remove the mounts.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the mount and mount to engine bracket, then remove the engine support and lifting fixtures.
  2.  
  3. If raised, carefully lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the engine mount-to-frame nuts and tighten to 32-50 ft. lbs. (43-68 Nm), the engine mount-to-frame nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) and the engine bracket to engine bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
