REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or inPuddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the rocker arm (valve) cover, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4.

When removing the valve train components, any components that are to be reused, must be kept in order for installation in the same locations from which they were removed.

  1. Remove the rocker arm nut(s), ball(s) and rocker arms from the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Carefully remove the pushrods.
  4.

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket surfaces completely.
  2.
  3. Coat the bearing surfaces of the rocket arm(s) and the rocker arm ball(s) with Molykote®or equivalent engine assembly lube, engine oil supplement, etc.
  4.
  5. Seat the pushrods in the lifters.
  6.
  7. Install the rocker arm(s), ball(s) and nut(s). Components being reused must be installed in the same location from which they were removed. Tighten the rocker arm nut(s) to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the rocker arm cover, using a new gasket, as outlined earlier in this section.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Mark all valve components so they are reinstalled in their original locations.

  1. Remove the rocker arm bolt and ball.
  2.
  3. Remove the rocker arm, guide, and pushrod.
  4.

To install:
  1. If removed, install the pushrod through the cylinder head and into the lifter seat.
  2.
  3. Install the guide, rocker arm, ball and bolt. Tighten the rocker arm bolts to 20-24 ft. lbs. (27-32 Nm)
  4.
  5. Install the rocker arm cover, as outlined in this section.

The intake pushrods and exhaust pushrods are different lengths. To distinguish the different pushrods, paint has been used, although this paint may be hard to identify after prolonged use. The intake pushrods are color-coded orange and are 6 in. (152mm) long. The exhaust pushrods are color-coded blue and are 63/8in. (162mm) long.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the rocket arm cover, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4.
  5. Remove the rocker arm nuts and balls and remove the rocker arms. Make sure to keep the components in order for installation purposes.
  6.

WARNING
Be careful when removing the pushrods, so they do not fall into the lifter valley!

  1. Remove the pushrod assemblies.
  2.

Place the rocker arms, balls and pushrod assemblies in a rack so they can be installed in their original positions.

  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.

To install:

When installing the rocker arms, balls and pushrod assemblies, coat their bearing surface with prelube 1052365 or equivalent. Make sure to install these components in the locations from which they were removed.

  1. Install the pushrods in their original location, making sure they seat in the lifter sockets.
  2.
  3. Install the rocker arms and ball, then tighten the nuts to 14-20 ft. lbs. (19-27 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the rocker arm (valve) cover, as outlined earlier in this section.
