REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or inPuddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the valve (rocker arm) cover, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the rocker arm nut and swing the rocker arm aside. Remove the pushrod.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine lift bracket, located at the rear of the engine.
  8.  

When removing the cylinder head to service the lifters, camshaft, camshaft bearing or pistons and connecting rods, it is NOT necessary to remove the oil fill tube or intake and exhaust manifolds.

  1. Route the spark plug wires down below the lower intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. With the help of an assistant, carefully remove the cylinder head with the exhaust and intake manifolds attached.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve lifter(s).
  8.  
  9. Inspect the lifter. The lifter foot is slightly convex. This can be detected by holding a good straight edge to the surface while looking into a light source. If the lifter foot is flat or grooved, it MUST be replaced.
  10.  

To install:

Whenever new valve lifters are being installed, coat the foot of the lifters with Camshaft Assembly Lube 1052365 or equivalent.

  1. Install the valve lifter(s).
  2.  
  3. Position a new cylinder head gasket, then install the cylinder head assembly with the help of an assistant. Tighten the retaining bolts to the specifications in the "Cylinder Head'' procedure located in this section.
  4.  
  5. Install the lift bracket and tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Route the spark plug wires up through the lower intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Install the pushrod(s), making sure they seat in the lifter(s).
  10.  
  11. Install the rocker and and nut.
  12.  
  13. Install the valve (rocker arm) cover, as outlined earlier in this section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

2.3L Engine
INTAKE LIFTERS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coil and module assembly electrical connections.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil and module from engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove idle speed power steering pressure switch connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove power steering drive belt and remove power steering pump as required.
  10.  
  11. Remove oil/air separator hose, fuel harness connector, vacuum hose to fuel regulator and fuel rail as required. Position fuel rail out of the way leaving fuel rail attached to fuel lines.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect timing chain housing but do not remove from vehicle. Install 2 bolts in timing chain housing to hold into place.
  14.  
  15. Remove intake cam housing cover to housing bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove intake cam housing to cylinder head retaining bolts using the reverse of the tightening procedure.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cover OFF of the housing by threading 4 of the housing to head bolts into the tapped holes in the camshaft cover. Tighten bolts in evenly so not to bind the cover on the dowel pins.
  20.  
  21. Remove 2 loosely installed bolts in cover and remove cover. Discard gasket from cover.
  22.  
  23. Note position of chain sprocket dowel pin for reassembly. Remove camshaft.
  24.  
  25. Remove valve lifters keeping in order of removal.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Install lifters into bores. Used lifters must be returned to their original position. Replace all lifters if new camshaft is being installed.
  2.  
  3. Prelube camshaft lobes and journals and install into same position as when removed.
  4.  
  5. Install new camshaft housing to camshaft housing cover seals into cover. Remove bolts holding housing into place and install cover and retaining bolts. Coat housing and cover retaining bolts with pipe sealer prior to installing. Torque bolts 82A, inProper sequence, to 11 ft. lbs. plus an additional 75º; on 82B bolts, tighten to 11 ft. lbs. plus an additional 25º.
  6.  
  7. Install timing chain and housing.
  8.  
  9. Install new O-rings on injectors and install fuel rail into cylinder head. Install fuel rail to camshaft housing bolts and tighten to 19 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Install injector wiring harness, vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator and oil/air separator assembly.
  12.  
  13. Lube inner sealing surface of intake camshaft seal with clean engine oil and install seal into housing using tool J-36009 or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Install drive pulley onto intake camshaft using tool J-36015 or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Install power steering pump and drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Install idle speed power steering switch connector.
  20.  
  21. Install ignition module and coil assembly with retainer bolts and reconnect electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Connect negative battery cable, start engine and check for oil leaks.
  24.  

EXHAUST LIFTERS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect electrical connection from ignition coil and module assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove ignition coil and module assembly from camshaft housing.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect electrical connector from oil pressure switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove transaxle fluid level indicator tube from exhaust camshaft cover and set aside for automatic transaxle only.
  10.  
  11. Remove exhaust camshaft cover and gasket.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect timing chain housing but do not remove from vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove exhaust housing to cylinder head bolts reversing the order of tightening. Leave 2 bolts loosely in place while removing cover from housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cover OFF of the housing by threading 4 of the housing to head retaining bolts into the tapped holes in the camshaft cover. Tighten bolts in evenly so not to bind the cover on the dowel pins.
  18.  
  19. Remove 2 loosely installed bolts in cover and remove cover.
  20.  
  21. Note position of chain sprocket dowel pin for reassembly. Remove camshaft.
  22.  
  23. Remove valve lifters keeping in order of removal.
  24.  
  25. Remove camshaft housing.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Install camshaft housing to cylinder head with a new gasket. Loosely install one bolt to hold into place.
  2.  
  3. Install lifters into bores. Used lifters must be returned to their original position. Replace all lifters if new camshaft is being installed.
  4.  
  5. Prelube camshaft lobes and journals and install into same position as when removed.
  6.  
  7. Install new camshaft housing to camshaft housing cover seals into cover. Remove bolt holding housing into place and install cover and retaining bolts. Coat housing and cover retaining bolts with pipe sealer prior to installing. Torque bolts, inProper sequence, to 11 ft. lbs. plus an additional 75º.
  8.  
  9. Install timing chain and housing.
  10.  
  11. Install exhaust camshaft housing cover with new gasket in place.
  12.  
  13. Install transaxle level indicator tube to exhaust camshaft cover.
  14.  
  15. Install electrical connection to oil pressure switch.
  16.  
  17. Install ignition coil and module assembly and connect electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Install negative battery cable and start vehicle. Inspect for leaks.
  20.  

2.5 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pushrod cover.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the rocker arms and move to the side.
  10.  
  11. Mark and remove the pushrods, retainer and lifter guides.
  12.  
  13. Mark and remove the lifters.
  14.  

Mark each valve component location for reassembly.

  1. Lubricate all bearing surfaces and lifters with engine oil and install the lifters.
  2.  
  3. Install the lifter guides, retainers and pushrods.
  4.  
  5. Position the rocker arms over the pushrods and tighten the rocker arm nuts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) with the lifter at the base circle of the camshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the pushrod cover, intake manifold and rocker arm cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

2.8L and 3.1L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rocker arm covers and intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the rocker arms nuts enough to move the rocker arms to 1 side and remove the pushrods.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lifters from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Using Molykote®or equivalent, coat the base of the new lifters and install them into the engine.
  12.  
  13. Position the pushrods and the rocker arms correctly into their original positions. Tighten the rocker arm nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  14.  
  15. Install the intake manifold and tighten the intake manifold-to-cylinder head bolts to specification.
  16.  
  17. Install the rocker cover. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Fill the cooling system.
  20.  

3.4L Engine
LEFT SIDE (FRONT)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove left side cam carrier as follows:
    1. Disconnect oil/air breather hose from cam carrier cover. Remove spark plug wires from plugs and remove rear spark plug wire cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove cam carrier cover bolts and lift OFF cover. Remove gasket and O-rings from cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove secondary timing belt by removing secondary timing belt actuator and tensioner assembly and sliding belt from pulleys.
    6.  
    7. Install 6 sections of fuel line hoses under the camshaft and between the lifters. This will hold the lifters in the carrier. For this procedure use 5 / 16 in. (8mm) fuel line hose for the exhaust valves and 7 / 32 in. (5.5mm) fuel line hose for the intake valves.
    8.  
    9. Remove exhaust crossover pipe and torque strut.
    10.  
    11. Remove torque strut bracket at engine.
    12.  
    13. Remove cam carrier mounting bolts and nuts and remove cam carrier.
    14.  
    15. Remove cam carrier gasket from cylinder head.
    16.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the 6 lifter hold-down hoses. Remove the lifters.
  6.  

To install
  1. Lubricate lifters with clean engine oil and install lifters into original position.
  2.  
  3. Install lifter hold-down hoses to cam carrier.
  4.  
  5. Install cam carrier following these steps:
    1. Install new gasket on cam carrier to cylinder mounting surface.
    2.  
    3. Install cam carrier tool J-38613 or equivalent, to carrier assembly.
    4.  
    5. Install cam carrier to cylinder head. Install mounting bolts and nuts. Torque bolts and nuts to 18 ft. lbs.
    6.  
    7. Remove lifter hold-down hoses and cam hold-down tool.
    8.  
    9. Install torque strut bracket to engine and install torque strut.
    10.  
    11. Install engine crossover pipe.
    12.  
    13. Install secondary timing belt and cam carrier cover.
    14.  
    15. Reconnect spark plug cover and wires.
    16.  
    17. Connect breather hose to cam carrier cover.
    18.  

  6.  
  7. Add fluids as required, reconnect negative battery cable. Start engine and recheck for leaks.
  8.  

RIGHT SIDE (REAR)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove right side cam carrier as follows:
    1. Remove intake plenum and right timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove right spark plug wires.
    4.  
    5. Remove air/oil separator hose at cam carrier cover.
    6.  
    7. Remove cam carrier cover bolts and lift of cover. Remove gasket and O-rings from cover.
    8.  
    9. Remove secondary timing belt by removing secondary timing belt actuator and tensioner assembly and sliding belt from pulleys. in. (5.5mm) fuel line hose for the intake valves.
    10.  
    11. Remove exhaust crossover pipe and torque strut.
    12.  
    13. Remove torque strut bracket at engine. Remove front engine lift hook.
    14.  
    15. Remove cam carrier mounting bolts and nuts and remove cam carrier.
    16.  
    17. Remove cam carrier gasket from cylinder head.
    18.  

  4.  
  5. Remove 6 lifter hold-down hoses.
  6.  
  7. Remove lifters.
  8.  

To install
  1. Lubricate lifters with clean engine oil and install lifters into original position.
  2.  
  3. Install lifter hold-down hoses to cam carrier.
  4.  
  5. Install cam carrier following these steps:
    1. Install new gasket on cam carrier to cylinder mounting surface.
    2.  
    3. Install cam hold-down tool J-38613 or equivalent, to carrier assembly.
    4.  
    5. Install cam carrier to cylinder head. Install mounting bolts and nuts. Torque bolts and nuts to 18 ft. lbs.
    6.  
    7. Remove lifter hold-down hoses and cam hold-down tool.
    8.  
    9. Install torque strut bracket to engine and install torque strut.
    10.  
    11. Install engine crossover pipe and engine lift hook.
    12.  
    13. Install secondary timing belt and cam carrier cover.
    14.  
    15. Install spark plug wires and cover.
    16.  

  6.  
  7. Add fluids as required. Connect negative battery cable. Start engine and check for fluid leaks.
  8.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rocker arm covers and intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rocker arm assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the guide retainer bolts and retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve lifter guides and and valve lifters.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Prelube (dip) the valve lifters with oil before installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the lifter guides, guide retainer and bolts and tighten to 27 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm assemblies, intake manifold and valve covers.
  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
