    Crossover Pipe

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



    2.2L Engine

    CAUTION
    Do NOT service the exhaust system while the engine is warm. Extreme heat is generated by engine and may cause severe burns if not allowed to completely cool before servicing.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the engine torque strut bolt, then rotate the strut up for access.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the outlet.
    8.  
    9. Detach the electrical connector from the coolant temperature sensor.
    10.  
    11. Remove the coolant temperature sensor.
    12.  
    13. Tag and detach any necessary wiring or vacuum lines.
    14.  
    15. Unfasten the nuts from the studs on the transaxle.
    16.  
    17. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    18.  
    19. Unfasten the bolts from the exhaust manifold and front exhaust pipe.
    20.  
    21. Remove the crossover pipe and the seal, if replacing the pipe. Inspect the seal for damage and replace, if necessary.
    22.  

    To install:
    1. If removed, install the seal.
    2.  
    3. Position the crossover pipe. Install the bolts to the exhaust manifold and front exhaust pipe. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Carefully lower the vehicle. Fasten the nuts to the studs at the transaxle. Tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Attach any necessary vacuum lines to electrical connectors, as tagged during removal.
    8.  
    9. Install the coolant temperature sensor and attach the connector to the sensor.
    10.  
    11. Connect the upper radiator hose to the outlet.
    12.  
    13. Rotate the torque strut back into position and install the retaining bolt.
    14.  
    15. Install the air cleaner assembly.
    16.  
    17. Connect the negative battery cable.
    18.  
    19. Start the engine and check the entire system carefully for leaks.
    20.  

    2.3L Engine
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Raise the vehicle and safely support with jackstands.
    4.  
    5. Carefully remove the spring loaded nuts from the exhaust manifold and pipe.
    6.  
    7. Support the catalytic converter. Cut the front pipe at the converter as close to the welds as possible to ensure an adequate overlap for clamping.
    8.  

    To install:
    1. Position the front pipe to the manifold.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the retaining bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Insert the pipe into the converter and install a clamp. Tighten the clamp to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Carefully lower the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Start the engine and check the entire system carefully for leaks.
    10.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolts from the transaxle.
    4.  
    5. Raise the vehicle and safely support with jackstands.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolts from the exhaust manifold and pipe. Remove the crossover pipe.
    8.  

    To install:
    1. Position the crossover to the manifold.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Carefully lower the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Install the bolt to transaxle and tighten securely.
    8.  
    9. Start the engine and check the entire system carefully for leaks.
    10.  

    V6 Engines
    EXCEPT 1995-96 3.1L ENGINES

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the crossover mounting nuts and/or bolts.
    6.  
    7. Remove the crossover pipe.
    8.  

    To install:
    1. Install the crossover to the manifold.
    2.  
    3. Install the mounting nuts/bolts and tighten them to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the air cleaner, then connect the negative battery cable.
    6.  
    7. Start the engine and check the entire system carefully for leaks.
    8.  

    1995-96 3.1L ENGINES

    1. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly.
    2.  
    3. Drain the engine coolant into a proper container.
    4.  
    5. Remove the engine torque struts, then rotate the engine forward.
    6.  
    7. Remove the tie straps from the heater outlet pipe and the ignition wiring harness.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the engine.
    10.  
    11. Detach the vacuum modulator pipe.
    12.  
    13. Disconnect the heater outlet hose and the thermostat bypass pipe.
    14.  
    15. Remove the heat shields.
    16.  
    17. Remove pipe bolts and the crossover pipe.
    18.  

    To install:
    1. Position the crossover pipe and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the heat shield and secure with the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the heater outlet hose and bypass pipe.
    6.  
    7. Attach the vacuum modulator pipe.
    8.  
    9. Fasten the tie straps at the heater outlet pipe and ignition wiring harness.
    10.  
    11. Connect the upper radiator hose to the engine.
    12.  
    13. Rotate the engine back to its original position and install the torque struts.
    14.  
    15. Refill the engine with coolant.
    16.  
    17. Connect the battery cable and install the air cleaner.
    18.
