REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove 2 / 3 of the brake fluid from the brake reservoir using a clean syringe or equivalent.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
- Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub and bearing assembly.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the caliper, as outlined later, and suspend from the strut with a wire hook or suitable piece of wire. Do NOT disconnect the brake hose or allow the caliper to hang from the brake line!
- Remove the outboard shoe and lining by using a suitable prybar to lift up the outboard pad retaining spring so it will clear the center lug.
- Remove the inboard pad by unsnapping the pad springs from the pistons.
- Wipe the outside surface of the caliper boots clean with denatured alcohol.
Bottom the pistons into the caliper bores if new shoe and linings are being installed, as follows:
- Using a C-clamp, clamp both pistons at the same time with a metal plate or wooden block across the face of both pistons. Be careful not to damage the pistons or caliper boots.
- After bottoming the pistons, lift the inner edge of each caliper boot next to the piston and press out any trapped air. The boots must lay flat.
- Make sure the convolutions are tucked back into place.
- Install the inboard shoe and lining/pad by snapping the shoe retainer springs into the pistons. The shoe retainer springs are already staked to the inboard shoe. Make sure both tangs of the retainer spring are installed inside the piston ID. The shoe must lay flat against the pistons.
- After installing the shoe and lining, check that the caliper boots are not touching the shoe. If there is contact, remove the shoe and lining and re-seat or re-position the boots.
- Install the outboard shoe and lining/pad by snapping the pad retainer spring over the caliper center lug and into the housing slot.
- Make sure both pads remain free of grease or oil. The wear sensor should be at the trailing edge of the pad during rotation. The back of the shoe should lay flat against the caliper.
- Install the caliper assembly, as outlined later in this section.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly, then carefully lower the vehicle.
- Fill the master cylinder to the FULL mark, then firmly apply the brake pedal three times to seat the pads.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
The pad thickness should be inspected every time that the wheels are removed. Pad thickness can be checked by looking down through the inspection hole in the top of the caliper. If the thickness of the pad is worn to within 0.030 inch (0.76mm) (if the pads are the riveted type, be sure not to include the thickness of the rivets when measuring pad thickness), all the pads should be replaced. A thermal material is sandwiched between the lining and backing. Don't include this material when determining the lining thickness. This is the factory-recommended measurement. Your state's automobile inspection laws may be different.
