REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  4.
  5. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
  6.
  7. If equipped with a 3.4L engine, remove the engine splash shields.
  8.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  1. Move the steering shaft dust seal for access to the pinch bolt. Refer to the Rack and Pinion procedure in this section.
  2.
  3. Remove the pinch bolt from the lower intermediate steering shaft.
  4.
  5. Loosen all the stabilizer insulator clamp attaching nuts and bolts.
  6.
  7. Place a jackstand under the center of the rear frame crossmember.
  8.
  9. Loosen the two front frame-to-body bolts (four turns only).
  10.
  11. Remove the two rear frame-to-body bolts.
  12.
  13. Carefully lower the rear of the frame just enough to gain access to remove the stabilizer shaft.
  14.
  15. Remove the insulators and clamps or bracket from the frame and control arms.
  16.
  17. Pull the stabilizer shaft rearward, swing down and remove from the left side of the vehicle.
  18.

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer shaft through the left side of the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Coat the new insulators with rubber lubricant and install.
  4.
  5. Loosely install the clamp to the control arm
  6.
  7. Loosely install the clamp and bracket or bolts to the frame.
  8.
  9. Tighten the frame nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on the 28mm and 30mm shafts. Tighten the bracket-to-frame nuts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm) on the 34mm shaft. Tighten the clamp-to-lower control arm bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  10.
  11. Raise the frame into position while guiding the steering gear into place.
  12.
  13. Install new frame-to-body bolts and tighten to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  14.
  15. Remove the frame jackstand.
  16.

When installing the intermediate shaft, make sure the shaft is seated before pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage.

  1. Install the steering gear pinch bolt and the dust seal onto the steering gear.
  2.
  3. For 3.4L engines, install the engine splash shields.
  4.
  5. Install the front wheel and tire assembly and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  6.
  7. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.
