Individual gauges may not be replaceable on these clusters. If one has failed, cluster assembly replacement may be necessary, depending on application and parts availability.

Conventional speedometer cables are not used; the speedometer is a fully electronic unit.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Cutlass Supreme
1998-94 VEHICLES

  1. If necessary for access to the battery, remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster trim plate.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the bolts securing the cluster to the carrier.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, remove the automatic transaxle control indicator cable.
  10.  
  11. Pull the cluster forward, detach the electrical connector, then remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Attach the electrical connector to the cluster, making sure it plugs in securely.
  2.  
  3. Place the cluster into the carrier.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, install the automatic transaxle control indicator cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster retaining bolts and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the cluster trim plate.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. If removed, install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  

Grand Prix
1988-93 VEHICLES

  1. If necessary for access to the battery, remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel pad cover from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, remove the Head Up Display (HUD) mounting bracket bolts/screws and bracket.
  8.  
  9. If necessary, remove the trim panel.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the screws retaining the instrument cluster.
  12.  
  13. Pull the cluster forward, detach the electrical connector(s) and the PRNDL cable (if necessary).
  14.  
  15. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Connect the electrical leads and PRNDL cable.
  2.  
  3. Position the cluster to the instrument panel. Install the retaining screws and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the trim panel.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, install the HUD mounting bracket and secure with the retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper panel pad.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. If removed, install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  

Regal
1988-94 VEHICLES
  1. If necessary for access to the battery, remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel pad cover from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cluster trim plate.
  8.  
  9. For 1992-94 vehicles, remove the left sound insulator and steering column knee bolster trim panel.
  10.  
  11. Detach the shift control cable at the bracket and lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shift indicator cable.
  14.  
  15. Detach the electrical connectors, then remove the instrument cluster.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the cluster to the instrument panel. Tighten the retaining bolts to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connector and shift cables, as applicable.
  4.  
  5. For 1992-94 vehicles, install the steering column knee bolster and left sound insulator.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster trim plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper panel pad.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. If removed, install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  

1994-96 Grand Prix and 1995-96 Cutlass Supreme and Regal

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate, as follows:
    1. If equipped, remove the front console, as outlined in Routine Maintenance 0 of this repair guide.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
    4.  
    5. Remove the ventilation (heater and A/C) control.
    6.  
    7. Set the parking brake.
    8.  
    9. If equipped with column shift, move the shift lever to L1 .
    10.  
    11. Tilt the steering to the lowest position and remove the tilt lever.
    12.  
    13. Insert a suitable prytool into the slot in the trim plate directly below the headlamp switch.
    14.  
    15. Pull the prytool handle down, releasing the tab and pull the plate rearward.
    16.  
    17. Grasp the trim plate at the right end below the right center A/C outlet and carefully pull to release the clip.
    18.  
    19. Remove the screw.
    20.  
    21. Grasp the trim plate bottom edge on both sides of the steering column and pull to release 2 additional steel clips.
    22.  
    23. Detach the connector from the lighter.
    24.  
    25. Insert a suitable prytool into the slot at the left upper corner and raise the handle.
    26.  
    27. Pull rearward at the center of the top edge to disengage the plastic clip on the trim plate, then remove the trim plate.
    28.

  5. Remove the two push-pin retainers at the top of the clusters.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the top of the cluster rearward and disengage the locating pins on the bottom of the cluster at the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Detach the electrical connector.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Attach the cluster electrical connector(s).
  2.  
  3. Position the locating pines on the bottom of the cluster to the pin receivers in the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster retaining bolts/screws and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument cluster trim plate, as follows:
    1. Fasten the trim plate upper plastic clip to the instrument panel.
    2.  
    3. Move the upper left corner into place.
    4.  
    5. Attach the connector to the lighter.
    6.  
    7. Push the clips on both sides of the steering column into place.
    8.  
    9. Push the metal clip at the bottom right corner of the trim plate into place.
    10.  
    11. Install the retaining screw and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Push the left corner of the trim plate below the headlamp switch into place.
    14.  
    15. Install the tilt lever and raise the steering column.
    16.  
    17. Move the shift lever to the P position.
    18.  
    19. Install the ventilation control.
    20.  
    21. Fasten the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
    22.  
    23. If equipped, install the front console.
    24.  

  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Lumina and Monte Carlo
1990-94 VEHICLES
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel pad from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the screws retaining the instrument cluster.
  8.  
  9. Pull the cluster forward, detach the electrical connector(s) and the PRNDL cable (if equipped), then remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Attach the electrical leads and PRNDL cable, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Position the instrument cluster, then secure with the retaining screws. Tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper panel pad.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10.  

1995-96 VEHICLES

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate, as follows:
    1. If equipped with a column shift, move the shift lever to the L1 position.
    2.  
    3. Tilt the steering column to its lowest position.
    4.  
    5. Remove the trim plate by unsnapping the clips from the instrument panel.
    6.

  5. Unfasten the cluster retaining bolts/screws.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the top of the cluster rearward and disengage the locating pins on the bottom of the cluster at the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Detach the cluster electrical connector(s).
  10.  

To install:
  1. Attach the cluster electrical connector(s).
  2.  
  3. Position the locating pines on the bottom of the cluster to the pin receivers in the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster retaining bolts/screws and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the trim plate by snapping it in the clips to the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Move the shift lever to the P position, if equipped with a column shifter.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
