In early 1990, General Motors changed the name of the Muncie HM-282 5-speed manual transaxle to the 5TM40. Only the name changed; the transaxles are identical. FOr 1991-93 models, the Getrag 284 5-speed transaxle is mated to the 3.4L engine. The Muncie and Getrag units are very similar in composition and their respective repair procedures are almost identical.
The transaxle has an identification tag and stamp on the exterior of the case. The identification information will assist in servicing and ordering parts. Refer to Routine Maintenance for explanations of the tags' coding.
