Some brake shoes contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

Some 1995-96 Luminas and Monte Carlos utilize a leading/trailing shoe design rear drum brake system. This brake assembly design operates with less total parts and is supposed to be easier to service. It uses a single universal spring to hold both the shoe and lining assemblies to the backing plate and also acts as a retractor spring for the shoes. Use care when servicing this brake assembly as the large spring can pinch fingers.
