Auxiliary Spring

Oldsmobile and Buick Only

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the leaf spring rear retention plate bolt.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the leaf spring front retention plate bolt just enough to rotate the plate clear of the rod.
  8.  

Do not use silicone lubricants on or near the auxiliary spring. These materials may damage or deteriorate rubber components.

  1. Install tool J 37956 or equivalent, making sure the pin in the stationary end of the clamp is inserted in the hole of the upper auxiliary spring bracket. Remove the plug from the upper bracket.
  2.  
  3. Seat the rod in the tool channel and hand-tighten.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rod-to-knuckle bolt.
  6.  
  7. Loosen tool J 37956 forcing screw to allow the spring to expand.
  8.  

When removing the auxiliary spring, make sure that the rod/bushing clears the transverse spring and boss on the knuckle.

  1. Remove the auxiliary spring and the spring compressor tool.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the auxiliary spring and the spring compressor tool.
  2.  
  3. Compress the auxiliary spring using J 37956 enough to install the rod-to-knuckle bolt. Make sure the pin in the stationary end of the clamp is inserted in the hole of the upper auxiliary spring bracket and the rod is seated in the tool channel. When compressing the auxiliary spring, make sure that the rod/bushing clears the transverse spring and boss on the knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Coat the threads of the rod-to-knuckle bolt with GM sealer 1052624 or equivalent, then install the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 177 ft. lbs. (240 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove tool J 37956 and install the plug.
  8.  
  9. Properly position the retention plate and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
