  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels and scribe the strut-to-knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the jack pad.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with dual exhaust, remove the exhaust system.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear leaf spring compressor tool J-35778 as outlined in the Transverse Spring Assembly procedures in this section.
  12.  
  13. Fully compress the spring but do not remove the spring or retention plates.
  14.  
  15. Remove the auxiliary spring, if so equipped. If not equipped, remove the rod-to-knuckle bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front rod from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the brake hose bracket, caliper and rotor. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose.
  20.  
  21. If equipped, detach the ABS electrical harness.
  22.  
  23. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
  24.  
  25. Separate the trailing arm from the knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the strut/upper auxiliary spring bracket from the knuckle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the knuckle.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Install the knuckle and position it to the strut/upper auxiliary spring bracket.
  2.  
  3. Hand-start the bolts, but do not tighten.
  4.  
  5. Coat the threads of the rod-to-knuckle bolt with GM 1052624 or equivalent. Install the front rod to the knuckle and snug the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Attach the trailing arm to the knuckle. Tighten the trailing arm bolt and nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm) for 1988-94 vehicles. For 1995-96 vehicles tighten the bolts and/or nut to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) plus a 75º rotation.
  8.  
  9. Install the hub/bearing assembly and tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If equipped, attach the ABS electrical harness.
  12.  
  13. Install the rotor and caliper.
  14.  
  15. Align the scribe marks to ensure proper alignment. Tighten the strut-to-knuckle attaching bolts to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm) for vehicles through 1994. For 1995-96 vehicles, tighten the bolts to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the brake hose bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear leaf spring compressor.
  20.  
  21. If removed, install the exhaust system.
  22.  
  23. Install the jack pad. Tighten the retaining bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the auxiliary spring (if equipped) and rod-to-knuckle bolt. Apply thread locking compound to the knuckle bolts.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the rod-to-knuckle bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) plus 90° for 1988-94 vehicles. For 1995-96 vehicles, tighten the bolts to 177 ft. lbs. (240 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the wheel and tire assembly and install the lug nuts finger-tight.
  30.  
  31. Carefully lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels and scribe the strut-to-knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear rod-to-knuckle bolt/screw.
  8.  
  9. Detach the front rod at the knuckle bolt/screw.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket and drum.
  12.  
  13. On vehicles with the police package only, remove the brake hose bracket, caliper and rotor.
  14.  
  15. If equipped, detach the ABS electrical harness.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub and bearing assembly and the brake assembly,.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the trailing arm from the knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the strut/stabilizer shaft bracket from the knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Install the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Fasten the strut/stabilizer shaft bracket to the knuckle and hand-start the nuts.
  4.  
  5. Coat the threads of the rod-to-knuckle bolt with GM 1052624 or equivalent. Install the front rod to the knuckle and snug the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Attach the trailing arm to the knuckle. Tighten the bolts/screws to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) plus an additional 75ºrotation.
  8.  
  9. Install the hub and bearing assembly and the brake assembly. Tighten the bolts/screws to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If equipped, attach the ABS electrical harness.
  12.  
  13. On vehicles with the police package only, install the rotor and caliper. Install the brake drum for all other vehicles.
  14.  
  15. Align the scribe marks to ensure proper alignment. Tighten the strut-to-stabilizer shaft attaching bolts to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the brake hose bracket.
  18.  
  19. Coat the threads of the rod-to-knuckle bolt/screw using thread locker 1052624 or equivalent. Tighten to 177 ft. lbs. (240 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the wheel and tire assembly and install the lug nuts finger-tight.
  22.  
  23. Carefully lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26.
