REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988-93 Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac and 1988-94 Chevrolet

Tool No. J35689A or equivalent, is required to remove the terminals from the connector on the turn signal switch.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this information.
  4.  
  5. Pull the turn signal cancelling cam assembly from the steering shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hazard warning knob-to-steering column screw and the knob.
  8.  

Before removing the turn signal assembly, position the turn signal lever so the turn signal assembly to steering column screws can all be removed.

  1. Remove the column housing cover-to-column housing bowl screw and the cover. If equipped with cruise control, unplug the cruise control electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the turn signal lever-to-pivot assembly screw and the lever; one screw is in the front and one is in the rear.
  4.  
  5. Using the terminal remover tool No. J 35689A or equivalent, label and unplug the wires F and G on the connector at the buzzer switch assembly from the turn signal switch electrical harness connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the turn signal switch-to-steering column screws and remove the switch.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the turn signal switch to the steering column, and tighten the turn signal switch-to-steering column screws.
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connectors, and install the turn signal lever to the pivot assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the hazard flasher knob. Install the cancelling cam.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel and column cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
  10.

WARNING
On vehicles with air bags, disable the SIR system. The vehicles wheels must be in the straight ahead position and the key must be in the LOCK position when removing or installing the steering column. Failure to do so may cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered and may result in otherwise unneeded SIR repairs.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, disable the SIR system, as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this information.
  6.  
  7. Remove the SIR coil assembly retaining ring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the SIR coil assembly. Let the coil hang freely if removal is not needed.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wave washer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shaft lock retaining ring using tool J 23653-SIR to push down the shaft lock. Discard the ring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam assembly and upper bearing spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat, then remove the inner race.
  18.  
  19. Remove the multi-function lever, as follows:
    1. Make sure the lever is in the center or OFF position.
    2.  
    3. Detach the electrical connection behind the lever.
    4.  
    5. Pull the lever straight out.
    6.

  21. Remove the housing cover end cap. Using fingers, pry up and out at the location shown in the accompanying figure. Tilt the end cap away from the lock housing cover and sleeve assembly then remove.

  23. Unfasten the round washer head screw and the flat head screw.
  24.  
  25. Remove the pivot and pulse dimmer switch assembly. Let the switch hang freely if removal is not needed.

  27. Using a suitable prytool, carefully pry OFF the hazard warning switch knob.
  28.  
  29. Place the turn signal in the right turn position (up).
  30.  
  31. Unfasten the three binding head cross recess screws.
  32.  
  33. Remove the turn signal switch, as follows:
    1. Detach the turn signal connector from the bulkhead.
    2.  
    3. Remove the wiring protector.
    4.  
    5. Gently pull the wire harness through the column and remove the switch.
    6.

  35. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  37. Connect the negative battery cable, then enable the SIR system, as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
