REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

- Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section.
- If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the flexible air duct from the TBI bonnet.
- Disconnect the crankcase vent hose.
- Detach the electrical connector and vacuum hose at the MAP sensor.
- Remove the air intake duct.
- Detach the electrical connectors from the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), and fuel injector.
- Remove the grommet, with the wires from the fuel meter body.
- Disconnect the throttle cable, transmission control cable and, if equipped, the cruise control cable.
- Tag and disconnect any necessary vacuum hoses.
- Disconnect the fuel feed and return lines, using tool J 2968-A or equivalent back-up wrench, on the fuel nuts to prevent them from turning.
- Remove and discard the fuel line O-rings.
- Unfasten the TBI attaching bolts/studs, then remove the throttle body assembly from the vehicle. Remove and discard the throttle body flange gasket.
- Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces.
Make sure to cover any openings to prevent and dirt or other contaminants from entering the engine while the throttle body is removed.To install:
- Position a new flange gasket, then position the TBI unit over the gasket. Install the attaching bolts/studs, then tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Place new O-rings on the fuel lines, then connect the feed and return lines. Tighten the fuel line nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), using tool J 29698-A or equivalent to prevent the nuts from turning.
- Connect the vacuum hoses, as tagged during removal.
- Attach the throttle cable, transmission control cable and, if equipped, the cruise control cable.
- Install the grommet with the wires to the fuel meter body.
- Attach the electrical connectors, making sure they are fully seated and latched.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- With the engine OFF , check to see that the accelerator pedal is free by depressing the pedal to the floor, then releasing it.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 2 seconds, then turn OFF for 10 seconds. Again turn the switch ON and check for fuel leaks.
- Install the air intake duct (TBI bonnet) with the gasket.
- Attach the electrical connector and vacuum hose to the MAP sensor.
- Connect the crankcase vent hose.
- Attach the flexible air duct to the TBI bonnet.
No physical adjustment of the IAC valve assembly is required after installation. The IAC valve is reset by the ECM when the vehicle is driven at a speed above 30 mph (48 kph), or when the diagnostic test terminal is grounded while the engine speed is above 2000 rpm.
