Neutral Safety and Back-up Light Switch

REMOVAL, INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the shift linkage, lever and nut.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the mounting bolts, then remove the switch, cable and nut.
  8.

To install:
  1. To install the old switch, perform the following:
    1. Place the shift shaft in NEUTRAL.
    2.  
    3. Align the flats of the shift shaft with the switch.
    4.  
    5. Loosely assemble the mounting bolts to the case.
    6.  
    7. Insert a gauge pin in the service adjustment hole and rotate the switch until the pin drops in to a depth of 1 / 8 in.(3mm).

    9. Remove the gauge pin and verify that the engine will only start in PARK or NEUTRAL. If it starts in any other position, readjust the switch.

  1. To install a new switch, perform the following:
    1. Place the shift shaft in NEUTRAL.
    2.  
    3. Align the flats of the shift shaft with the switch.
    4.

If the switch has been rotated and the pin broken, the switch can be adjusted using the old switch procedure.

    1. Install the mounting bolts and torque to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). If the holes do not align with the mounting boss on the transaxle, verify that the shift shaft is in NEUTRAL position; do not rotate the switch. The switch is pinned in the NEUTRAL position.

If the switch has been rotated and the pin broken, the switch can be adjusted using the old switch procedure.

  1. Adjust the switch as follows:
    1. Place the transaxle in the N position.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the switch attaching screws.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service hole in the switch with the hole in the carrier.
    6.  
    7. Insert a 3 / 32 in. (2.4mm) gauge pin into the hole.
    8.  
    9. Tighten the mounting bolts/screw to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Remove the gauge pin.

  3. Attach the electrical connector and shift linkage.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
