REMOVAL

If it becomes necessary to replace the distributor, it is critical to maintain proper engine timing. Do not crank the engine after removing the distributor. To facilitate ease of installation: Bring #1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. The timing marks on the damper and indicator block will be aligned. Make sure the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark tower in the cap.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.
  5. Unplug the electrical connectors from the ignition coil and ECM harness. ( DO NOT use a screwdriver or hammer to release the locking tabs.)
  6.
  7. Remove the distributor cap by simultaneously pushing down and turning the two screws counterclockwise 180°. Move the cap out of the way.
  8.
  9. If necessary, remove secondary wires from cap. Note the position of each wire for proper installation.
  10.
  11. Remove the distributor clamp bolt and hold-down.
    1. Scribe an alignment mark on the distributor housing and a corresponding mark on the engine to denote distributor placement, when installed.
    2.
    3. Mark the position of the rotor, then pull the distributor up gently, until the rotor just stops turning counterclockwise, mark the new position of the rotor against the housing. Remove the distributor.

INSTALLATION

Engine Not Disturbed
  1. Align the rotor with the last mark made on distributor housing.
  2.
  3. Install distributor housing into the engine being careful to keep the scribe mark on housing and on block aligned.
  4.
  5. As distributor is installed into the block, the rotor will turn clockwise to the first mark and stop as the distributor seats.
  6.

At this point, the rotor should be aligned with the first mark, and the mark scribed on the distributor housing should be aligned with the mark on the block.

  1. Reconnect the electrical connectors
  2.
  3. Install the distributor cap by seating the cap onto the distributor housing, then simultaneously push down and turn the mounting screws 180°
  4.
  5. Install the air cleaner assembly
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable
  8.
  9. Start engine and check the timing.

Engine Disturbed

If the engine was accidentally cranked after the distributor was removed, the following procedure can be used for installing the distributor:

  1. Remove No. 1 spark plug.
  2.
  3. Place a finger over the No. 1 spark plug and crank the engine slowly until compression is felt.
  4.
  5. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley to the "0" on the engine timing indicator block. It may be necessary to use a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft bolt to turn the engine.
  6.
  7. Turn the rotor to point between the #1 and #6 spark plug towers on the distributor cap.
  8.
  9. Reconnect the electrical connectors
  10.
  11. Install the distributor cap by seating the cap onto the distributor housing, then simultaneously push down and turn the mounting screws 180°.
  12.
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly
  14.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
  17. Start engine and check the timing.
