Crankshaft Damper

Print

The inertia weight section of the crankshaft damper is assembled to the hub with a rubber sleeve. The removal and installation procedures (with the proper tools) must be followed or movement of the inertia weight section on the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft damper, and the engine timing reference.

Removal & Installation 3.1L Engine

The following special tools are necessary to perform this operation: a crankshaft damper/pulley puller and installation tool.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
  4.
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the inner fender splash shield on the passenger side of the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Remove the damper retaining bolt.
  10.

To install:
  1. Coat the front cover seal contact area (on damper) with clean engine oil.
  2.
  3. Apply a suitable sealant (RTV will suffice) to the key and keyway.
  4.
  5. Place the damper in position over the key on the crankshaft. Install damper onto crankshaft using a suitable crankshaft damper installation tool.
  6.
  7. With damper secured on the crankshaft, remove the installer tool and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the inner fender splash shield. Install the wheel assembly, if removed.
  10.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.
  13. Install the serpentine belt
  14.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.

3.4L Engine

The following special tools are necessary to perform this operation: a harmonic balancer removal tool and a harmonic balancer installation tool.

  1. Remove the serpentine belt.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  4.
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  6.
  7. Remove the right inner fender splash shield.
  8.
  9. Remove the balancer bolt, you may need an assistant to keep the flywheel from turning.
  10.
  11. Install the special harmonic balancer remover tool, turn the puller screw and remove the balancer.
  12.

Fig. Fig. 4: You must use the special tool to install the crankshaft balancer

  1. With damper secured on the crankshaft, remove the installer tool and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 76 ft lbs. (103 Nm). You may need assistance to keep the flywheel from turning.
  2.
  3. Install the inner fender splash shield. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.
  5. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Install the serpentine belt.

3.8L Engine

The following special tools required for this operation are: flywheel holding tool, crankshaft balancer puller, torque angle meter.

  1. Remove the serpentine belt.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  4.
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  6.
  7. Remove the right inner fender splash shield.
  8.
  9. Hold flywheel with the special tool, to prevent it from turning.
  10.
  11. Remove the balancer bolt.
  12.
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer with a suitable puller, using 1 / 4 inch bolts to attach to the pulley. Screw in 1 / 4 inch. Turn the puller screw and remove the balancer.
  14.

The balancer is serviced as an assembly. Do not attempt or separate the pulley from the balancer hub.
