Removal & Installation

The directions given for this repair can be taken as a generic process for all the different engine/transaxle combinations in this group of vehicles. The differences in procedure are minor. Where one application calls for the removal of a bolt, the next application may call for the removal of a retainer, or a clamp. However, it is always wise to double check the torque specifications against the chart, for the given year and model.

The following are some of the special tools required for this procedure:

Engine support fixture

Engine support fixture lift hook bracket

Engine support fixture lift hook

Engine support fixture swivel lift hook

Engine support fixture lift hook wing nut

  1. Obtain a suitable engine support tool.
  2.
  3. Install strut tower support assemblies to the passenger and driver's side strut towers respectively.
  4.
  5. Slide a cross bracket onto the strut tower tube.
  6.
  7. Install the front support plate to the driver's side radiator core brace.
  8.
  9. Install the inner leg and outer leg/foot into strut tower tube.
  10.
  11. Install the strut tower tube into the passenger side strut tower assembly and secure with the large pin.
  12.
  13. Adjust the outer leg/foot so the assembly centers securely on the front support plate.
  14.

  1. Insert the radiator shelf tube through the cross bracket and secure it at the driver's side strut tower support assembly with the large pin.
  2.
  3. Install the dedicated hooks to the strut tower tube and the radiator shelf tube.
  4.
  5. Insert the hooks through the engine lift brackets.
  6.
  7. Remove any play from the hooks and cross bracket before loosening engine mounts.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  10.
  11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  12.
  13. Tag and detach the electrical connectors from the transaxle.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness retainer-to-transaxle shift cable bracket.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the transaxle shift cable bracket and heat shield assembly, and the wire cable/bracket assembly from the body.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the vacuum supply from modulator at the transaxle.
  20.
  21. Unbolt the retaining bolt holding the transaxle indicator tube, and remove the tube assembly.
  22.
  23. Remove the retaining bolt from the TV cable, and the cable from the TV link.
  24.
  25. Remove the ground cable to engine/transaxle stud and the stud from the engine/transaxle.
  26.
  27. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  28.
  29. Remove the front wheels, and engine splash shields.
  30.
  31. Remove the wiring harness retainers at the front engine frame. Disengage the power steering cooler lines attached to the frame.

  40.
  41. Remove both lower ball joints retaining bolts and nuts.
  42.
  43. Remove the flywheel covers from the engine/transaxle assembly.
  44.
  45. Remove the starter.
  46.
  47. Access the torque converter bolts, to remove them, by rotating the engine flywheel.
  48.
  49. Drain and remove the transaxle pan.
  50.
  51. Disconnect the transaxle cooler lines at the transaxle and bracket.
  52.
  53. Pull both LH and RH drive axles from the transaxle, and secure them to the steering knuckle/strut assembly.

  67. Mark the flywheel and converter to ease in installation and prevent an imbalance condition.
  68.
  69. Remove the flywheel.
  70.
  71. For installation, refer to the procedure under rear main seal.
