Oil Pan

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft damper.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flywheel shields.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter, as outlined in Engine Electrical .
  12.  
  13. Support the engine from underneath, at the transaxle-mounting bracket.
  14.

  1. Remove the engine mount bracket-to-engine bolts.
  2.  
  3. Raise the engine enough to clear the oil pan removal.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the oil pan bolts, then remove the oil pan. Remove the gasket.
  6.

  1. Thoroughly clean all gasket mating surfaces including the oil pan flanges, oil pan rail, front cover, rear main bearing cap and the threaded holes.

Check the oil pan for any damage, check at the drain hole, and check the drain plug for stripped threads. Repair or replace as necessary.

To install:
  1. Replace the oil pan gasket if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the oil pan gasket tabs at the rear main bearing caps.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan, and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the pan bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the engine, and secure the mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install the starter, as outlined in Engine Electrical .
  10.  
  11. Replace the flywheel shields.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft damper.
  16.  
  17. Fill the crankcase with the proper type and amount of oil.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

3.4L Engine

Removal and installation of the oil pan in this vehicle requires the use of some special tools. Needed are the following:



Universal Support Fixture
 
Engine Support Fixture Adapters
 
Engine Support Fixture Adapter
 
Torque Wrench Adapter
 

  1. Install a suitable universal support fixture, engine support fixture adapters and the engine support fixture adapter.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil filter drip shield, bolts and shield.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold.
  12.  
  13. Place jackstands under the frame at the front and rear.
  14.  
  15. Remove the engine mount-to-frame nuts, then remove the transaxle mount-to-frame nuts.
  16.  
  17. Loosen, but do not remove, the rear frame bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front frame bolts, then lower the front of the frame.
  20.  
  21. Remove the engine mount and bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the starter, as outlined in Engine Electrical of this repair guide.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil level wiring harness connector.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transaxle brace.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil pan side bolts, remove the oil pan bottom bolts, and remove the pan.
  30.  
  31. Thoroughly clean all gasket mating surfaces including the oil pan flanges, oil pan rail, front cover, rear main bearing cap and the threaded holes.
  32.  

Check the oil pan for any damage, check at the drain hole, and check the drain plug for stripped threads. Repair or replace as necessary.

To install:
  1. Position the oil pan gasket.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the oil pan gasket tabs at the rear main bearing caps.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan, then tighten the pan bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan side bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) using a torque wrench adapter.
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the oil level wiring harness connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the transaxle brace.
  12.  
  13. Install the starter, as outlined in Engine Electrical .
  14.  
  15. Install the engine mount bracket and mount.
  16.  
  17. Raise the frame to the proper position using new frame bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the jackstands.
  20.  
  21. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold.
  22.  
  23. Install the transaxle and engine mount nuts.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil filter drip shield and bolts.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle and fill the crankcase with oil.
  28.  
  29. Remove the special tools installed at the beginning of this procedure.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32.  

3.8L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft balancer with a suitable puller.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  6.  
  7. Drain the oil pan into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the oil pan bolts, then remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the old oil pan gasket and discard. The formed rubber oil pan gasket cannot be reused. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

To install:
  1. Install the new formed rubber oil pan gasket on the oil pan flange.
  2.  
  3. Apply thread lock compound to the oil pan bolt threads before assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan and tighten the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  6.  


WARNING
Do not overtorque pan bolts or damage to the oil pan will occur, resulting in an oil leak.

  1. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower the vehicle, then fill the crankcase with oil.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
