REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



3.1L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pan as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump and drive shaft extension.
  4.  

Do not remove the pickup tube from the cover unless loose or broken.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

3.4L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pan as described earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pump and drive shaft extension. Clean all parts in a suitable solvent; remove all varnish, sludge, and dirt.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the oil pump retaining bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

3.8L Engine
  1. Remove the engine front cover, as outlined in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil filter adapter, pressure regulator valve and spring.
  4.  
  5. Remove oil pump covers attaching screws and cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the gears.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan as described earlier in this section.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump pipe and screen assembly attaching bolts.
  12.  
  13. Clean all parts in a suitable solvent. Remove all varnish, sludge and dirt. Remove all traces of old gasket from the front cover and engine block. Use compressed air to blow-dry the screen and housing.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the pump cover and front cover for cracks and scoring, porous or damaged casting, excessive wear or damaged threads.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the oil pump gears for: chipping and galling, scoring or excessive wear.
  18.  

If there is a question about the integrity of any portion of the oil pump or housing, replace the cover assembly.

To install:
  1. Lubricate the gears with petroleum jelly, then assemble the gears in the housing. Pack gear cavity with petroleum jelly.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump cover and screws. Tighten the oil pump cover screws to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the pressure regulator spring and valve.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil filter adapter with a new gasket. Tighten the oil filter adapter bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front cover onto the engine.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pump pipe and screen with a new gasket and tighten bolts securely.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan, as outlined in this section.
  14.  
  15. Change the oil, install a new oil filter.
  16.
