Rear Main Seal

Print

  1. Remove the flywheel from the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove the old rear main seal, with a prytool. Do not damage the surface of the crankshaft.
  4.
  5. Check the inside diameter (I.D.) of the bore for nicks or burrs and correct as required. Inspect the crankshaft for burrs or nicks on the surface that contacts the seal. Repair or replace the crankshaft as required. Check for an "O" ring in the rear main bearing cap.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install a new seal using a special seal installation tool.
  2.
  3. Apply a light coat of oil to the inside diameter (I. D.) of the new seal and install it over the mandrill. Slide the seal onto the mandrill until the dust lip (the back of the seal) bottoms squarely against the collar of the tool.
  4.
  5. Align the dowel pin of the tool with the dowel pinhole in the crankshaft and attach the tool to the crankshaft by hand .
  6.
  7. Turn the "T" handle of the tool so that the collar pushes seal into the bore, turn the handle until the collar is tight against the case. This will insure that the seal is seated properly.
  8.
  9. Loosen the "T" handle of the tool until it comes to a stop. This will insure that the collar will be in the proper position for installing a new seal.
  10.
  11. Make sure the seal is seated squarely in the bore.
  12.
  13. Install the flywheel.
  14.
