GM Lumina/Silhouette/Transport APVs 1990-1999 Repair Guide

Inside Rearview Mirror and Arm

The rearview mirror is attached to a support with a retaining screw. The support is secured to the windshield glass. The glass supplier, using a plastic polyvinyl butyl adhesive, installs the support. To reinstall a mirror support arm to the windshield, follow the instructions included with an inside mirror installation kit, which may be purchased at most auto supply stores.

The basic steps of mirror and support replacement are as follows:

Mark the outside of the windshield to where the mirror mounts.
Separate the pedestal mount from the mirror.
If glue was left on the windshield, scrape it off with a razor blade. Do the same to the pedestal mount.
Clean the windshield thoroughly with alcohol, or window cleaner. Sand the windshield side of the pedestal mount lightly, then clean it very thoroughly.
Wet a lint free cloth or paper towel and wipe the affected areas with water; allow to dry completely.
Apply the accelerator to the windshield and pedestal, and following the directions on the mirror kit, apply the glue to the pedestal.
Attach the pedestal to the windshield and hold it in position for 30 seconds. Reattach the mirror when the glue has set. Wait at least 30 minutes.
