REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

CAUTION
Some models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical .

This procedure requires the use of two special tools; a steering wheel puller and a lock plate compressor.

  1. If equipped with an air bag, disable the system as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  2.
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.
  7. For vehicles without air bags, remove the shaft lock cover.
  8.
  9. For vehicles with air bags, perform the following:
    1. Remove the coil assembly retaining ring.
    2.
    3. Remove the inflatable restraint coil assembly, allowing the coil to hang freely if removal is not needed.
    4.
    5. Remove the wave washer.
    6.

Fig. Fig. 2: Remove and discard the shaft lock retaining ring using a suitable lock plate compressor

  1. Remove the shaft lock.
  2.
  3. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  4.
  5. On vehicles without tilt columns, remove the upper bearing spring and thrust washer.
  6.
  7. On vehicles with tilt columns, remove the upper bearing spring, inner race seat and inner race.
  8.
  9. Move the turn signal lever up, into the "right turn" position.
  10.
  11. Remove the multi-function lever.
  12.
  13. Remove the turn signal switch arm retaining screw.
  14.
  15. Remove the turn signal switch screws and let the switch hang freely.
  16.

On vehicles with air bags, the coil will become uncentered if the steering column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate, or the centering spring is pushed down, allowing the hub to rotate while the coil is remove the steering column.

  1. If equipped with air bags, remove the coil assembly with the wire from the column as follows:
    1. Remove the wiring protector.
    2.
    3. Attach a piece of mechanics wire to the coil terminal connector to aid in reassembly.
    4.
    5. Gently pull the wire through the column.
    6.

  1. Remove the key from the lock cylinder set.
  2.
  3. Remove the buzzer switch assembly.
  4.
  5. Reinsert the key in the lock cylinder.
  6.
  7. Turn the key to the LOCK position.
  8.
  9. Unfasten the retaining screw, then remove the lock cylinder.

To install:
  1. Install the lock cylinder and retaining screws and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  2.
  3. Turn the key to the RUN position.
  4.
  5. Install the buzzer switch assembly.
  6.
  7. Route the turn signal switch assembly wire harness through the steering column. Let the switch hang freely. Attach the switch connector through the bulkhead connector.
  8.

Fig. Fig. 6: Routing the coil assembly wire

  1. Install the turn signal switch and retaining screws and tighten to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the wire protector shield.
  4.
  5. Install the turn signal switch arm and retaining screw and tighten to 29 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the hazard knob assembly.
  8.
  9. Install the multi-function lever.
  10.
  11. On vehicles without tilt columns, install the upper bearing spring and thrust washer. On vehicles with tilt columns, install the upper bearing spring, inner race seat and inner race.
  12.
  13. Lubricate with synthetic grease, then install the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  14.
  15. Install the shaft lock.
  16.
  17. Install a new shaft lock retaining ring. Align it to the block tooth on the shaft, using a lock plate compressor tool to press down the shaft lock.
  18.
  19. On vehicles with air bags, perform the following:
    1. Set the steering shaft so that the block tooth on the race & upper steering shaft is at the 12 o'clock position, wheels on the vehicle should be straight ahead.
    2.
    3. Place the ignition switch in the LOCK position to ensure that the coil will not be damaged.
    4.
    5. Install the wave washer.
    6.

  20.

On vehicles with air bags, the coil will become uncentered if the steering column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate, or the centering spring is pushed down, allowing the hub to rotate while the coil is remove the steering column.

    1. If a new coil is being installed, assembly the pre-centered coil to the steering column. Remove and discard the centering tab.
    2.

Fig. Fig. 7: If necessary, follow this procedure to center the coil assembly

    1. Make sure the coil assembly hub is centered.
    2.

  1. For vehicles with air bags, install the coil as follows:
    1. Pull the wire tight while position the coil to the steering shaft.
    2.
    3. Align the opening in the coil with the horn tower and the locating bump between the 2 housing cover tabs.
    4.
