Ignition Switch and Dimmer Switch

CAUTION
Some models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical .

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



Standard Column

This procedure requires the use of two special tools; a steering wheel puller and a lock plate compressor.

  1. If equipped with an air bag, disable the system as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shaft lock cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shaft lock retaining ring using a suitable lock plate compressor tool to press down the shaft lock. Dispose of the ring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shaft lock.
  12.  
  13. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper bearing spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the thrust washer.
  18.  
  19. Move the turn signal lever up, into the "right turn" position.
  20.  
  21. Remove the multi-function lever.
  22.  
  23. Remove the turn signal switch arm retaining screw.
  24.  
  25. Remove the turn signal switch screws and let the switch hang freely.
  26.  
  27. Remove the key from the lock cylinder set.
  28.  
  29. Remove the buzzer switch assembly.
  30.  
  31. Reinsert the key in the lock cylinder.
  32.  
  33. Turn the key to the LOCK position.
  34.  
  35. Remove the lock retaining screw and remove the lock cylinder.
  36.  
  37. If equipped with cruise control, remove the housing cover end cap, unplug the cruise control connector and gently pull through the shroud, bowl, and steering column housing assembly.
  38.  
  39. Remove the washer head screw, the hex nut and dimmer switch.
  40.  
  41. Remove the mounting stud and ignition switch.
  42.  

To install:
  1. If equipped with cruise control, gently pull the connector through the steering column housing assembly, bowl and shroud and connect the plug.
  2.  
  3. Install the housing cover end cap and screw and tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the ignition switch and mounting stud and tighten the stud to 35 inch lbs. (4.0 Nm). Adjust the ignition switch by moving the switch slider to the extreme left position and then move the slider 1 detent to the right (off lock).

  1. Install the dimmer switch hex nut, screw, and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4.0 Nm). Adjust the dimmer switch.

  3. To adjust the dimmer switch, depress the switch slightly to allow insertion of a 3 / 32 in. drill bit into the hole above the actuator rod. Force the switch upward then tighten the screw.

  1. Install the switch using the original screws. Use of screws that are too long could prevent the column from collapsing on impact.
  2.  
  3. Install the lock cylinder and retaining screws and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Turn the key to the RUN position.
  6.  
  7. Install the buzzer switch assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the turn signal switch and retaining screws and tighten to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the wire protector shield.
  12.  
  13. Install the turn signal switch arm and retaining screw and tighten to 29 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the hazard knob assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the multi-function lever.
  18.  
  19. Install the thrust washer and upper bearing spring.
  20.  
  21. Lubricate with synthetic grease and install the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install the shaft lock.
  24.  
  25. Install a new shaft lock retaining ring. Align it to the block tooth on the shaft, using a lock plate compressor tool to press down the shaft lock.
  26.  
  27. Install the shaft lock cover.
  28.  
  29. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped, enable the air bag system as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  32.  

Tilt Column See Figures 1 and 2

This procedure requires the use of three special tools; a steering wheel puller, a pivot pin removal tool, and a lock plate compressor.

  1. If equipped with an air bag, disable the system as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shaft lock cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shaft lock retaining ring using a lock plate compressor tool, or equivalent to press down the shaft lock. Dispose of the ring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shaft lock.
  12.  
  13. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper bearing spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inner race seat and inner race.
  18.  
  19. Move the turn signal lever up, into the "right turn" position.
  20.  
  21. Remove the multi-function lever.
  22.  
  23. Remove the hazard knob assembly and the turn signal switch arm retaining screw.
  24.  
  25. Remove the turn signal switch screws.
  26.  
  27. Remove the wire protector and gently pull the wire harness through the gearshift bowl shroud, gearshift lever bowl, and the steering column housing assembly, and remove the switch assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove the screws and remove the lock housing cover assembly.
  30.  
  31. Remove the tilt wheel lever.
  32.  
  33. Remove the cover end cap and the dimmer switch rod actuator.
  34.  
  35. Gently pull the pivot switch wire harness through the bowl assembly and column housing.
  36.  
  37. Remove the tilt wheel spring retainer and spring.
  38.  
  39. Remove the pivot pins, using a suitable pivot pin removal tool.
  40.  
  41. Reinstall the tilt lever.
  42.  
  43. Pull back on the tilt lever and pull the column housing down and away from the column.
  44.  
  45. Remove the column from the vehicle.
  46.  


WARNING
Once the column is removed from the vehicle, it is extremely susceptible to damage.

  1. Remove the bearing and seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower spring retainer and dispose of the retainer.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower bearing spring and seat.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hex head screws and remove the adapter and bearing assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the column shaft assembly and check for accident damage.
  10.  

Mark the upper and lower shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly wig cause the steering wheel to be turned 180°.

  1. Disconnect the upper shaft from the lower shaft assembly. Tilt 90° to each other and disengage.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the centering sphere from the upper shaft assembly. Rotate 90° and slip out.
  4.  
  5. Remove the housing support retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the column housing support assembly and dimmer switch rod from the steering column jacket assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rod from the column housing support assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two screws and remove the shift lever gate from the support assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hex nut and screw and remove the dimmer switch assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the mounting stud and remove the ignition switch assembly and actuator rod.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the gate to the support assembly and tighten the retaining screws to 33 inch lbs. (3.7 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the dimmer switch rod to the support assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the column housing support assembly and tighten the retaining screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the actuator assembly to the track housing support assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the joint preload spring to the two centering spheres.
  10.  
  11. Install the centering sphere. Lubricate with lithium grease and slip into the upper shaft assembly and rotate 90°.
  12.  

The marks on the upper and lower shaft assembly must line up after assembled. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180°.

  1. Connect the upper shaft to the lower shaft assembly. Line up the mark tilt the assemblies 90° to each other and engage.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the column shaft assembly with lithium grease and install the jacket assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the lock cylinder and retaining screws and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Turn the key to the RUN position.
  8.  
  9. Install the buzzer switch assembly.
  10.  
  11. Feed the turn signal switch wiring harness through the steering column housing assembly, gearshift lever bowl and the gearshift bowl shroud.
  12.  
  13. Install the turn signal switch and retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the wire protector shield.
  16.  
  17. Install the turn signal switch arm and secure with the retaining screw. Tighten to 20 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the hazard knob assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the multi-function lever.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper bearing spring, inner race seat and inner race.
  24.  
  25. Lubricate with synthetic grease and install the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  26.  
  27. Install the shaft lock.
  28.  
  29. Install a new shaft lock retaining ring. Align it to the block tooth on the shaft, using a lock plate compressor tool to press down the shaft lock.

  31. Install the shaft lock cover.
  32.  
  33. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this section.
  34.  
  35. Install the locking nut and retaining ring.
  36.  
  37. Install the horn contact into the horn tower. Push down on the horn lead and turn right into a lock position.
  38.  
  39. Install the horn pad and the screws from the back of the steering wheel.
  40.  
  41. Coat the inner surface with lithium grease and install the adapter and bearing assembly. Tighten the screws to 30 inch lbs. (3.4 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Install the lower bearing seat and spring. Press the retainer onto the shaft to compress the shaft. Spring height must be 1.0 in. (25.4 mm).
  44.  
  45. Install the bearing and seal retainer.
  46.  
  47. Install the ignition switch and mounting stud and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4.0 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Install the dimmer switch and adjust as follows:
    1. Depress the switch slightly to allow insertion of a 3 / 32 in. drill bit into the hole above the actuator rod.
    2.  
    3. Force the switch upward then tighten the screw. Tighten the screw to 35 inch lbs. (4.0 Nm).

  51. Install the switch using the original screws. Using screws that are too long could prevent the column from collapsing on impact.

  53. Install the column to the instrument panel.

  55. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped, enable the air bag system as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
