Power Steering Rack and Pinion

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dust boot from the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the lower stub shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fluid line retaining clips at the pump, then disconnect the lines.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the remaining brackets and clips at the crossmember. Support the body safely with the appropriate equipment, to allow lowering of the subframe.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear subframe mounting bolts and carefully lower the rear of the subframe approximately 5 in. (12.7cm).
  18.  
  19. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then remove the steering gear by maneuvering it through the left wheel opening.

To install:
  1. Install the rack and pinion through the left wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the rack and pinion mounting nuts, then tighten them to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Raise the subframe assembly and install the rear mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove any supports, then install the brackets and clips to the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel and tire assemblies. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Connect the fluid lines at the pump and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the line retaining clips. Connect the intermediate shaft to the stub shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the dust boot over the steering gear.
  16.  
  17. Install the air cleaner assembly and connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Fill and bleed the steering system.
  20.
