FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS

The cooling system should be filled with a 50/50 mixture of good quality ethylene glycol antifreeze and water.

LEVEL CHECK

The coolant level should be checked at regular intervals, or if the temperature gauge registers abnormally hot. The coolant level should be between the FULL and LOW marks on the coolant reservoir tank. Add coolant to the reservoir tank as required to maintain proper coolant level.

At 15,000 mile (25,000 km) intervals the cooling system should be checked for leaks or damage. Also the proper level and freeze protection of the antifreeze should be checked. It is important to maintain the proper level of protection against freezing and loss of coolant from boiling. Inexpensive antifreeze testers are available to measure the degree of protection provided by the cooling system.

DRAIN AND REFILL

  1. With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Turn the cap slowly to the left until it reaches a stop. Wait until pressure is relieved, then press down on cap and continue to rotate to the left.
  2.
  3. Open the radiator drain plug to drain the coolant. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  4.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Add a a 50/50 mixture of good quality ethylene glycol antifreeze and water to the radiator and reservoir tank. Fill the radiator to the base of the filler neck and the reservoir tank to the FULL mark.
  2.
  3. Run the engine, with the radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose is hot.
  4.
  5. With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level reaches the bottom of the filler neck. Install the radiator cap.
  6.

DRAIN, FLUSH AND REFILL

The cooling system should be drained, flushed and refilled with fresh coolant every 2 years or 30,000 miles (48,000 km). This operation should be performed with the engine cold.

  1. With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Turn the cap slowly to the left until it reaches a stop. Wait until pressure is relieved, then press down on cap and continue to rotate to the left.
  2.
  3. With the radiator cap removed, run the engine until the upper radiator hose is hot (this shows that the thermostat is open and the coolant is flowing through the system).
  4.

CAUTION
Care should be taken as the antifreeze will be extremely hot.

  1. Stop the engine and open the radiator drain plug to drain the coolant. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  2.

  1. Close the drain plug. Add water until the system is filled and run the engine until the upper radiator hose is hot again.
  2.
  3. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the drained liquid is nearly colorless.
  4.
  5. Drain the system and close the radiator drain plug tightly.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the hose from the water reservoir tank. Remove the tank and pour out any coolant. Clean the inside of the tank, then reinstall.
  8.
  9. Add a a 50/50 mixture of good quality ethylene glycol antifreeze and water to the radiator and reservoir tank. Fill the radiator to the base of the filler neck and the reservoir tank to the FULL mark.
  10.
  11. Run the engine, with the radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose is hot.
  12.
  13. With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level reaches the bottom of the filler neck. Install the radiator cap.
