REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.

  1. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spindle cap without damaging the sealing portion of the cap.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the staked portion of the nut using a suitable chisel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the castle nut and washer.
  8.  
  9. Slacken the parking brake cable by loosening its adjusting nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the backing plate plug, located on the back side of the backing plate.
  12.  
  13. Insert a suitable tool into the plug until its tip contacts the shoe hold-down and push the spring in the direction of the leading shoe. The allows a greater clearance between the shoes and the drum.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drum from the spindle.
  16.

To install:
  1. Install the drum on the spindle.
  2.  
  3. Install the castle nut and washer.
  4.  
  5. Tighten castle nut to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm), then stake in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the spindle cap.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel and tire, then lower the vehicle.
