Rear Axle Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1985-86 Sprint
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake line at the flex hose. Remove the flex hose and brake line retainers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake hose pipe from bracket on the axle assembly.
  8.  
  9. Plug the brake flex hose to prevent loss of brake fluid and system contamination due to moisture.
  10.  
  11. Remove brake backing plate nuts, then remove backing plate.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, disconnect the parking brake cables and reposition out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Remove U-bolt nuts, U-bolts and jounce stop.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear axle assembly from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Place axle on leaf spring by aligning pin on the top of the leaf spring with hole in underside of axle. Then fit pin on underside of leaf spring in hole of spring seat and tighten U-bolt nut to 22-32 ft. lbs. (30-45 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Apply watertight sealant to joint seam of axle and brake backing plate and tighten brake backing plate nuts to 13-20 ft. lbs. (18-28 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install flex hose in bracket and secure with retainer. Install brake line at flex hose.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake drum and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Bleed the brake system and adjust the rear brakes as necessary.
  10.  

1987-88 Sprint
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake hose attaching clip at the trailing arm bracket. Disconnect the brake pipe from the wheel cylinder and remove the brake hose/pipe from the trailing arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear brakes and disconnect the parking brake from the brake shoe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the backing plate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the backing plate from the rear axle.
  12.  
  13. Support the center of the rear axle with a floor jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lateral rod body side bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting nut.
  18.  
  19. Lower the rear axle gradually until tension of suspension spring is relieved, then remove spring.
  20.  
  21. Remove trailing arm front bolts and remove rear axle from vehicle.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Raise the rear axle into the vehicle and loosely install the trailing arm front bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install coil spring on rear axle spring seat with flat face upward. Seat lower spring end with stepped part of rear axle seat.
  4.  
  5. Raise floor jack slightly and install shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Tighten to 32-50 ft. lbs. (45-70 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install lateral rod and tighten nut to 32-50 ft. lbs. (45-70 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten trailing arm nut to 50-65 ft. lbs. (70-90 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Apply watertight sealant to joint seam of axle and brake backing plate. Install backing plate and tighten bolts to 13-20 ft. lbs. (18-28 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Put brake hose/pipe through hole in bracket on trailing arm and install pipe flare nut to wheel cylinder. Tighten to 10-13 ft. lbs. (14-18 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Secure brake pipe/hose to bracket with E-clip.
  16.  
  17. Apply water tight sealant to parking brake cable and install on backing plate. Attach cable end to brake shoe.
  18.  
  19. Install rear brake shoes and brake drum. Install the wheel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Bleed brake system and adjust rear brakes.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.
