REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
Please re-read the air conditioning section in Routine Maintenance so that the system may be discharged properly. Always wear eye protection and gloves when discharging the system. Observe no smoking/no open flame rules.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the electrical connector to the compressor.
  4.  
  5. Safely discharge the system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 hoses from the compressor fittings. Immediately cap the compressor ports and the hose ends to prevent dirt from entering.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the compressor drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the compressor mounting bolts and remove the compressor from the engine. You are reminded that the compressor is a heavy component - support it securely when removing the bolts.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Attach the compressor mounting bolts and tighten them to 20 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Install and tighten the drive belt to the correct tension. Make sure the belt is correctly seated on its pulleys.
  4.  
  5. Install the fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hoses to the compressor and connect the electrical leads.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Evacuate and recharge the air conditioning system as explained in Routine Maintenance .

  3. Remove the electrical connector to the compressor.
  4.  
  5. Safely discharge the system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 hoses from the compressor fittings. Immediately cap the compressor ports and the hose ends to prevent dirt from entering.
  8.  
  9. Loosen or remove the compressor drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Elevate and safely support the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the splash shield under the engine.
  12.  
  13. Remove the compressor mounting bolts and remove the compressor from the engine. You are reminded that the compressor is a heavy component - support it securely when removing the bolts.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Support the compressor in place and install the retaining bolts. Tighten them to 18. ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. With the vehicle safely supported by jackstands, reinstall the splash shields.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and install the drive belt. Adjust it to the proper tension.
  6.  
  7. Use new O-rings in the hose ends and connect the hoses to the compressor. tighten both lines only to 18 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Install the wiring to the compressor.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Evacuate and recharge the air conditioning system as explained in Routine Maintenance .

  1. Run the engine at idle with the air conditioning on for approximately 10 minutes.
  2.  
  3. Stop engine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the washer reserve tank.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect all electrical connections.
  8.  
  9. Recover refrigerant (discharge system) from refrigeration system.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect hoses from the compressor service valves. Cap open fittings immediately.
  12.  
  13. Remove engine undercover, if necessary. Loosen the compressor mounting bolts. Remove the compressor drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the compressor mounting bolts. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install compressor with mounting bolts and torque retaining bolts evenly to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) Install and adjust the drive belt. Install engine undercover, if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Reconnect hoses to the compressor service valves.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect all electrical connections.
  6.  
  7. Install the washer reserve tank.
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Evacuate, charge and test refrigerant system. Check system for leaks.
  12.
