THROTTLE VALVE (TV) CABLE



See Figure 1

  1. With the ignition OFF , depress the accelerator pedal all the way. On carbureted vehicles, check that the throttle plates are fully open. If they are not, adjust the throttle linkage.
  2.  
  3. Peel the rubber dust boot back from the throttle valve cable.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the adjustment nuts on the throttle cable bracket (rocker cover) just enough to allow cable housing movement.
  6.  
  7. Have an assistant depress the accelerator pedal fully.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the cable housing so that the distance between its end and the cable stop collar is 0-0.04 inches (0-1.0mm).

  1. Tighten the adjustment nuts. Make sure that the adjustment hasn't changed. Install the dust boot.

NEUTRAL SAFETY/BACKUP SWITCH



1985-90

See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Locate the neutral safety switch on the side of the transaxle and loosen the switch retaining bolts.
  2.  
  3. Move the gear selector to the NEUTRAL position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the neutral safety switch connector and connect an ohmmeter between the 2 adjacent terminals on the switch lead.
  6.

  1. Adjust the switch to the point where there is continuity between the 2 terminals. Tighten the retaining bolts.
  2.  
  3. Move the shift selector to PARK and check that continuity is present. Move the selector to any of the other positions and check that there is no continuity when the car is in gear.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the wiring to the switch.
  6.  

1991-93

Adjust the switch by aligning the neutral basic line scribed in the switch with the groove in the switch sleeve.

SHIFT CONTROL CABLE



1985-90
  1. Loosen the adjusting nut on the linkage and check the linkage for freedom of movement.
  2.  
  3. Push the manual lever fully toward the right side of the car as far as it will go.
  4.  
  5. Return the lever 2 notches to the NEUTRAL position.
  6.  
  7. Set the gear selector to NEUTRAL . While holding the selector slightly to the right, have someone tighten the adjusting nut on the manual lever.

1991-92

  1. Loosen the cap nut on the manual lever.
  2.  
  3. Position the manual lever in the NEUTRAL range.
  4.  
  5. Set the shift selector to NEUTRAL .
  6.  
  7. Tighten the cap nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

1993

See Figure 6

  1. Position the manual lever in the NEUTRAL range.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left splash shield by removing the 6 retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shift select cable nut, lock washer and the shift select cable from the manual lever.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the manual lever counterclockwise until it reaches the PARK position.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the manual lever clockwise 2 detent positions until the manual lever is in the neutral position.
  12.  
  13. Install the shift select cable into the manual lever and secure with the shift select cable nut.
  14.  
  15. Pull the shift select cable taut by making sure no deflection exists in the shift select cable. Tighten the shift select cable nut to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the splash shield bolts and tighten them to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

After adjusting the shift select cable, check the following:
  1. With the ignition switch in the LOCK position and the manual selector lever in the P , park position try to manually push the vehicle. The vehicle should not move.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the vehicle cannot be driven in the N , neutral position.
  4.  
  5. Verify that the vehicle can be driven in the D , 2 and L positions.
  6.  
  7. Verify that the reverse gear does operate in R
  8.
