REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1985-88 VIN Code 4 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain plug when the pan is empty.
  6.  


CAUTION
Used motor oil may cause skin cancer if repeatedly left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods. Although this is unlikely unless you handle oil on a daily basis, it is wise to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water immediately after handling used motor oil.

  1. Remove the right splash shield.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pan. If the pan is difficult to remove, tap it gently with a rubber or plastic mallet. Do not use a pry bar to release it.
  6.  


WARNING
Do not bend or deform the edge (flange) of the oil pan during removal.

To install:
  1. Clean the pan thoroughly and remove all sludge and solid matter. Clean the mating surfaces of the pan and the engine, removing all traces of old gasket material and sealer. During the cleaning, remove the drain bolt and clean the threads. Install a new gasket on the bolt and install the bolt in the pan.
  2.  
  3. Apply a new gasket and/or sealant to the pan and install the pan to the engine.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten the pan bolts to 4 ft. lbs. (48 inch lbs.)
  6.  
  7. Install the right splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  10.  
  11. Refill the engine oil and connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.  

1988 VIN Code 5 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain plug when the pan is empty.
  6.

  1. Remove the right splash shield.

  3. Remove the front exhaust pipe. Disconnect it at the manifold and the catalytic converter.
  4.  
  5. Remove the exhaust bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan bolts. Remove the oil pan. If the pan is difficult to remove, tap it gently with a rubber or plastic mallet. Do not use a pry bar to release it.
  8.  


WARNING

To install:

  11. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  12.  
  13. Refill the engine oil and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.

1989-90 VIN Code 6 Engine 1991-92 VIN Code 5 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Elevate and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left splash shields.
  6.  
  7. Drain the oil.
  8.  


CAUTION
Used motor oil may cause skin cancer if repeatedly left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods. Although this is unlikely unless you handle oil on a daily basis, it is wise to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water immediately after handling used motor oil.

  1. Disconnect the sensor to the oxygen sensor.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front exhaust pipe. Disconnect the pipe at the catalytic converter and the exhaust manifold.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 nuts and the 19 bolts from the oil pan. Remove the oil pan from the engine.
  6.  


WARNING
Use caution when removing the oil pan. The oil pump at the front of the engine may be damaged during removal. Use caution not to damage the edge of the pan.

  1. Remove the 2 nuts and 2 bolts holding the oil pick-up and strainer to the engine. Remove the pick-up assembly and its gasket.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the pan and cylinder block of all sealant and gasket material. Remove any traces of oil on these surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Thoroughly clean the pick-up and screen assembly and allow it to air dry.
  4.  
  5. Install the pick-up and strainer assembly with a new gasket. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Apply a continuous bead of GM Sealant 1050026 or similar to both sides of the new oil pan gasket and place the gasket in position on the pan.
  8.  
  9. Install the pan onto the engine with all the nuts and bolts finger tight.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter and to the exhaust manifold.
  14.  
  15. Connect the wiring to the oxygen sensor.
  16.  
  17. Install the left and right splash shields.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  20.  
  21. Refill the engine oil and connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  24.  

1990 VIN Code 5 Engine 1991-92 VIN Code 6 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain plug when the pan is empty.

  9. Install the right splash shield.

  11. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  12.  
  13. Refill the engine oil and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

1993 Except VIN Code 8 Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain plug when the pan is empty.
  8.  


CAUTION
Used motor oil may cause skin cancer if repeatedly left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods. Although this is unlikely unless you handle oil on a daily basis, it is wise to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water immediately after handling used motor oil.

  1. Remove the both splash shields.
  2.  
  3. Separate the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 hanger bolts and remove the front pipe from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 bolts from the lower the front end of the center support.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 lower engine reinforcement brace to transaxle bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 lower engine reinforcement brace to cylinder block bolts and remove the engine reinforcement brace from the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 19 bolts, 2 nuts and using a screwdriver, pry between the engine oil pan and lower cylinder block reinforcement brace.
  14.  
  15. If the pan is difficult to remove, tap it gently with a rubber or plastic mallet.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 3 bolts oil strainer and gasket.
  18.  


WARNING

  5. Install and tighten the pan bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower engine reinforcement brace to cylinder block and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower engine reinforcement brace to the transaxle and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  12.  
  13. Install the both splash shields.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower the front end of the center support and tighten the 2 bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

1993 VIN Code 8 Engine

This procedure also includes removal of the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain plug when the pan is empty.
  8.

  1. Remove the both splash shields.

  3. Separate the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 hanger bolts and remove the front pipe from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 bolts and lower the front end of the center support.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 13 bolts, 2 nuts and using a screwdriver, pry between the engine oil pan and lower cylinder block reinforcement brace.
  10.  
  11. If the pan is difficult to remove, tap it gently with a rubber or plastic mallet.
  12.  


WARNING
Do not bend or deform the edge (flange) of the oil pan during removal.

  1. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and the baffle plate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 3 bolts oil strainer and gasket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 3 transaxle mounting bolts from the engine rear end plate side.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 14 bolts from the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 6 Torx® bolts from the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean the pan thoroughly and remove all sludge and solid matter. Clean the mating surfaces of the pan and the engine, removing all traces of old gasket material and sealer. During the cleaning, remove the drain bolt and clean the threads. Install a new gasket on the bolt and install the bolt in the pan.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace to cylinder block mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Install the 14 bolts to the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the 6 Torx® bolts to the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the 3 transaxle mounting bolts to the engine rear end plate side and tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the 3 bolts, oil strainer and gasket and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Apply a new gasket and/or sealant to the oil pan mating surface.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine oil pan to the lower cylinder block reinforcement brace and tighten the pan nuts and bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  18.  
  19. Install the both splash shields.
  20.  
  21. Install the center support and tighten the 2 bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)
  22.  
  23. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.
