REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1985-88

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side speaker grille. The grille may be attached with a clip (which must be pulled loose to remove the grille) or with a screw.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower trim cover from the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hood release lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater duct assembly.
  12.

  1. Remove the instrument hood. Remove the air conditioner outlet register, then remove the 4 screws and remove the hood.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 6 screws from the instrument cluster, and disconnect the speedometer cable and the wiring connectors. Remove the meter assembly from the instrument panel.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Connect the wiring harnesses and the speedometer cable to the cluster. Place the cluster in the dash and secure the 6 screws. Make certain the wiring is properly placed so as not to become pinched or crushed.
  2.  
  3. Install the air conditioning outlet then install the hood and its screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater duct assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the hood release lever and the lower steering column trim.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the speaker grille.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering wheel and connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1989-92

Removing the steering wheel is not required, but may make the job easier.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On 1989-90 models, remove the hood release lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 4 screws from the lower left dash trim and pull the trim out.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, disconnect the wiring from the radio speaker.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the ductwork from the lower air outlet.
  10.  
  11. Remove the trim panel from the car.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 screws from the trim panel (bezel).
  16.

  1. Pull the panel out, releasing the spring clips behind the dash. With the panel loose, disconnect the wiring to the dash switches.
  2.  
  3. Remove the switches from the panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 electrical connectors and the cigarette lighter from the trim bezel and remove the bezel from the car.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 screws holding the instrument cluster trim.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the wiring from the hazard (4-way) flasher and dimmer switches.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster trim panel.
  12.

  1. Remove the 4 attaching screws holding the cluster, move it away from the dash and disconnect the wiring harnesses and the speedometer cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster from the car.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Connect the speedometer and electrical cables to the cluster. Install the cluster and the 4 retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Attach the wiring connectors for the hazard flasher and the dimmer switches.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster trim bezel.
  6.  
  7. Place the dash switches in place on the lower trim bezel and connect the wiring to the switches.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower trim bezel, making sure all the clips engage.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering column upper and lower covers.
  12.  
  13. Connect the air conditioning ductwork to the lower air outlet if so equipped.
  14.  
  15. Attach the wiring to the radio speaker.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower left dashboard trim panel and its 4 screws.
  18.  
  19. Install the hood release lever.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

1993

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 screws from the instrument cluster trim panel, disengaging the 2 lower clips.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 4 screws, disconnect the 3 electrical connectors and remove the instrument cluster assembly from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.
