Door Glass, Regulator and Motor

REMOVAL and INSTALLATION

Front Door Glass
NOVA
  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Carefully remove the water deflector shield and lower the window glass fully.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outer weatherstrip.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sash channel mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Carefully remove the glass through the top of the door.
  10.  
  11. Remove the window regulator mounting bolts and remove the regulator
  12.  
  13. If the window glass is to be replaced:
    1. Remove the sash channel from the glass.
    2.  
    3. Apply a solution of soapy water to the sash channel.
    4.  
    5. Install the channel to the new glass using a plastic or leather mallet to tap the sash into place. Note that the sash channel must be exactly positioned on the glass or the bolt holes will not align at reinstallation.

To install:
  1. Install the regulator and tighten the bolts evenly.
  2.  
  3. Install the window glass and install the sash channel mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Wind the window slowly up and down and observe its movement and alignment. The position of the glass can be adjusted by moving the equalizing arm bracket up or down. Make small adjustments and work for a perfectly aligned window.
  6.  
  7. Install the outer weatherstrip.
  8.  
  9. Install the water deflector, making sure it is intact and properly sealed.
  10.  
  11. Install the door trim panel.
  12.  

1989-92 PRIZM
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Carefully remove the water deflector shield and lower the window glass fully.
  4.  
  5. Remove the glass channel mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the window glass by lifting it through the top of the door.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the window regulator as follows:
    1. For power windows, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the 4 mounting bolts. The regulator will be removed with the motor attached.
    2.  
    3. For manual windows, remove the 3 mounting bolts.
    4.

  11. Remove the 2 mounting bolts holding the equalizer arm bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the window regulator.
  14.  


CAUTION
If the motor is to be removed from the power window regulator, install a large stopper bolt through the regulator frame before removing the motor. When the motor is removed, the spring loaded gear will be disengaged, causing the gear to rotate until the spring is unwound. Install the stopper bolt to prevent possible injury by the spinning gear.

To install:
  1. Before installing the regulator assembly, apply a light coat of lithium grease to the sliding surfaces and pivot points of the regulator. Do not apply grease to the spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the regulator:
    1. With power windows, install the 4 mounting bolts and connect the motor wiring.
    2.  
    3. With manual windows, install the 3 mounting bolts.
    4.

  5. Install the bolts holding the equalizer arm bracket.
  6.  
  7. Place the glass into the door and install the glass channel retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the door glass by moving the equalizer arm up or down as necessary to get the window level in the frame.
  10.  
  11. Install the water deflector, making sure it is intact and properly sealed.
  12.  
  13. Install the door trim panel.
  14.  

1993 PRIZM
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Carefully remove the water deflector shield and lower the window glass fully.
  4.  
  5. Remove the glass channel mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the window glass by lifting it through the top of the door.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 4 bolts and one nut and remove the inner door panel brace from the door.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the power window motor electrical connector, if so equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 nuts and remove the regulator from the door.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Before installing the regulator assembly, apply a light coat of lithium grease to the sliding surfaces and pivot points of the regulator.
  2.  
  3. Install the regulator to the door and tighten the 3 bolts and nuts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the power window motor electrical connector, if so equipped.
  6.  
  7. Install the 4 bolts and one nut and the inner door panel brace to the door and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the glass channel mounting bolts and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the water deflector shield.
  12.  
  13. Install the door trim panel.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

Rear Door Glass
NOVA

The movable window glass cannot be removed without removing the fixed glass.

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Carefully remove the water deflector shield and lower the window glass fully.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outer weatherstrip.
  6.  
  7. Partially remove the door weatherstrip to remove the run channel guide upper retaining screw.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rubber or felt run channel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 lower run channel guide bolts and remove the guide.
  12.  
  13. Pull the fixed glass forward and remove it. Place it in a safe and protected location, away from the work area.
  14.  
  15. Remove the sash channel bolts.
  16.  
  17. Carefully remove the glass through the top of the door.
  18.  
  19. Remove the window regulator mounting bolts and remove the regulator.
  20.  
  21. If the window glass is to be replaced:
    1. Remove the sash channel from the glass.
    2.  
    3. Apply a solution of soapy water to the sash channel.
    4.  
    5. Install the channel to the new glass using a plastic or leather mallet to tap the sash into place. Note that the sash channel must be exactly positioned on the glass or the bolt holes will not align at reinstallation.

To install:
  1. Install the regulator and tighten the bolts evenly.

  3. Install the window glass and install the sash channel mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the fixed glass and make certain it is correctly positioned.
  6.  
  7. Install the run channel guide and install the 2 lower retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the felt or rubber run channel. Make certain there are no twists or kinks in the channel.
  10.  
  11. Install the top screw in the channel guide and secure the door weatherstrip.
  12.  
  13. Wind the window slowly up and down and observe its movement and alignment. The position of the glass can be adjusted by moving the equalizing arm bracket up or down. Make small adjustments and work for a perfectly aligned window.
  14.  
  15. Install the outer weatherstrip.
  16.  
  17. Install the water deflector, making sure it is intact and properly sealed.
  18.  
  19. Install the door trim panel.
  20.  

1989-92 PRIZM
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Carefully remove the water deflector shield and lower the window glass fully.
  4.  
  5. Remove the glass from the regulator arm.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the window weatherstrip at the rear edge of the glass run channel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws holding the top and bottom of the rear channel guide.
  10.  
  11. Lift the door weatherstrip and remove the screws holding the (black) window filler panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the door glass by pulling it upward.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with power windows, disconnect the motor wiring connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts holding the regulator and remove the regulator.
  18.

  5. If equipped with power windows, connect the wiring to the motor.
  6.  
  7. Install the glass into the door and connect it to the regulator.
  8.  
  9. Install the black window filler panel and its 2 screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear glass guide channel.
  12.  
  13. Install the window weatherstrip.
  14.  
  15. Install the water deflector, making sure it is intact and properly sealed.
  16.  
  17. Install the door trim panel.
  18.  

1993 PRIZM
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Carefully pull the water deflector far enough away to gain access to the center guide channel bolts. Loosen the rubber window run channel along the center guide channel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 bolts and one screw and the center guide channel from the rear door.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the power window motor electrical connector, if so equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 bolts from the regulator and slide the regulator arm roller out of the window bottom channel.
  12.  
  13. Lift the window and remove from the door.
  14.  
  15. Remove the regulator from the door.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Before installing the regulator assembly, apply a light coat of lithium grease to the sliding surfaces and pivot points of the regulator.
  2.  
  3. Install the regulator to the door.
  4.  
  5. Install the window to the door.
  6.  
  7. Slide the regulator arm roller into the window bottom channel. Install the 4 bolts to the regulator and tighten the 4 bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the power window motor electrical connector, if so equipped.
  10.  
  11. Install the 2 bolts and one screw and the center guide channel to the rear door. Tighten the 2 bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Press the rubber window run channel in place along the center guide channel.
  14.  
  15. Position the water deflector in place.
  16.  
  17. Install the door trim panel.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
