REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Nova

See Figures 1 through 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side speaker grille. The grille may be attached with a clip (which must be pulled loose to remove the grille) or with screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower trim cover from the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hood release lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater duct assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument hood. Remove the air conditioner outlet register, then remove the 4 screws and remove the hood.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 6 screws from the instrument cluster, and disconnect the speedometer cable and the wiring connectors. Remove the meter assembly from the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the heating ducts to the dash vents.
  18.  
  19. Remove the finish panel on the end of the dash.
  20.  
  21. Remove the right side speaker grille.
  22.  
  23. Remove the right side speaker bracket with the speaker attached. Disconnect the wiring to the speaker.
  24.  
  25. Remove the glove compartment door with its reinforcement.
  26.  
  27. Remove the glove box door lock striker.
  28.  
  29. Remove the center trim panel over the console.
  30.  
  31. Remove the radio equipment and accessories.
  32.  
  33. Remove the lower center trim panel on the console.
  34.  
  35. Remove the heater control panel. Label and disconnect the electrical and vacuum connections to the panel.
  36.  
  37. Remove the side-window defroster nozzles. The grilles are snapped into place.
  38.  
  39. Remove the mounting bolts for the dashboard assembly and remove the dash from the car. Be careful of any wiring and/or hoses routed along the back of the dash. Do not damage any other components while the dash is being removed from the car.
  40.  

To install:
  1. Position the dashboard in the car. Attach any wiring harnesses to the inside of the dash before securing the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the side defroster nozzles.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater control panel and connect its wiring and vacuum lines. Install the trim panel on the lower console.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio and accessory equipment and install its trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the glove box door lock striker.
  10.  
  11. Install the glove box door with the door reinforcement.
  12.  
  13. Install the right side speaker bracket and speaker. Connect the wiring to the speaker.
  14.  
  15. Install the speaker grille.
  16.  
  17. Install the end trim panel.
  18.

  1. Install the heater ducts to the dash vents. Make sure they are properly connected and will not come loose.
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument assembly, connecting the speedometer cable and the wiring connectors.
  4.  
  5. Install the hood for the instrument cluster and then install the air outlet grilles.
  6.  
  7. Connect the air ductwork to the grilles.
  8.  
  9. Install the hood release lever.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering column trim covers.
  12.  
  13. Install the left side speaker grille.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering wheel
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.

Prizm
1989-92

See Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hood release lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 4 screws from the lower left dash trim and pull the trim out.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring from the radio speaker.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the ductwork from the lower air outlet and remove the trim panel from the car.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 screws from the trim panel (bezel).
  16.  
  17. Pull the panel out, releasing the spring clips behind the dash. With the panel loose, disconnect the wiring to the dash switches.
  18.  
  19. Remove the switches from the panel.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 electrical connectors and the cigarette lighter from the trim bezel and remove the bezel from the car.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 4 screws holding the instrument cluster trim.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the wiring from the hazard (4-way) flasher and dimmer switches.
  26.  
  27. Remove the cluster trim panel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the 4 attaching screws holding the cluster, move it away from the dash and disconnect the wiring harnesses and the speedometer cable. Remove the instrument cluster from the car.
  30.  
  31. Remove the cup holder.
  32.  
  33. Remove the radio. Disconnect the wiring and antenna cables.
  34.  
  35. Remove the glove box and trim assembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the 4 screws holding the heater control panel and remove the panel.
  38.  
  39. Remove the screws from the center console trim panel and remove the panel.
  40.  
  41. Carefully pry the left and right side-window defroster vents loose from the dash.
  42.  
  43. Remove the 5 attaching bolts from the instrument panel.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the 3 wiring connectors and the relay unit on the left side of the dash.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the electrical connector on the right side of the dashboard.
  48.  
  49. Detach the defroster duct retainers behind the dash and remove the dashboard from the vehicle. Be careful of any wiring and/or hoses routed along the back of the dash. Do not damage any other components while the dash is being removed from the car.
  50.  

To install:
  1. Place the dash in position inside the car. Be careful to insert the defroster duct retainers into their bulkhead (firewall) clips.
  2.  
  3. Connect the 3 electrical connectors and the relay unit on the left side and the harness connector on the right side to their proper wire harnesses.
  4.  
  5. Install the dashboard mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the left and right side-window defroster outlets.
  8.  
  9. Install the center console trim panel.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the heater control panel.
  12.  
  13. Install the glove box and trim assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the radio and connect the electrical and antenna cables.
  16.  
  17. Install the cup holder and its attaching screws.
  18.  
  19. Connect the speedometer and electrical cables to the instrument cluster. Install the cluster and the 4 retaining screws.

  1. Attach the wiring connectors for the hazard flasher and the dimmer switches.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster trim bezel.
  4.  
  5. Place the dash switches in place on the lower trim bezel and connect the wiring to the switches.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower trim bezel, making sure all the clips engage.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column upper and lower covers.
  10.  
  11. Connect the air conditioning ductwork to the lower air outlet if so equipped.
  12.  
  13. Attach the wiring to the radio speaker.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower left dashboard trim panel and its 4 screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the hood release lever.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering wheel.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.

1993

See Figure 10

  1. Disable the SRS (air bag) system as outlined in Chassis Electrical and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the A-pillar lower trim panel from both sides.
  4.  
  5. Remove 1 nut from each kick panel and panels from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel as outlined in Drive Train .
  8.  
  9. Remove the 5 screws and steering column upper and lower trim panels.
  10.  
  11. Remove the center console.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 2 screws and the instrument cluster trim panel, disengaging 2 lower clips.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 4 screws and the instrument cluster assembly, disconnecting 3 electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Remove the illumination control knob.
  18.  
  19. Remove 1 nut from illumination controller.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 4 clips and the instrument panel left side outlet trim bezel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the illumination controller electrical connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the illumination controller from the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 4 mounting bolts from the instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle by lifting up and pulling toward rear, disengaging 5 clips.
  30.  
  31. Disassemble the ventilation and heater ducts as necessary by removing the retaining screws or clips.
  32.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the ventilation and heater ducts as necessary by installing the retaining screws or clips.
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument panel to the vehicle; secure with the 5 clips.
  4.  
  5. Install the 4 mounting bolts to the instrument panel. Tighten the instrument panel mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the illumination controller to the instrument panel left side outlet trim bezel; secure with 1 nut. Tighten the illumination controller nut to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the illumination controller electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the instrument panel left side outlet trim bezel, pushing in to engage the 4 clips and connect the 3 instrument cluster electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Install the instrument cluster assembly; secure with 4 screws.
  14.  
  15. Install instrument cluster trim panel, engaging 2 lower clips; secure with 2 screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the center console.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering column upper and lower trim panels; secure with 5 screws.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering wheel as outlined in Drive Train .
  22.  
  23. Install 2 kick panels; secure each with 1 nut. Tighten the kick panel nuts to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install 2 A-pillar lower trim panels.
  26.  
  27. Install the negative (-) battery cable. Tighten the negative (-) battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal retainer to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Enable the SRS system as outlined in Chassis Electrical .
