SHIFT LEVER FREE-PLAY

1985-88

See Figures 1 and 2

The shift lever free-play is adjusted through the use of a replaceable shim installed at the bottom of the lower shift lever seat. Select a shim of a thickness that allows about lb. preload at the top of the lever and install it in the shift lever seat.

SHIFT CABLES

The shift control cables are precisely adjusted at the factory during assembly and cannot be accurately adjusted in the field. Should either of the cables become stretched and therefore out of adjustment, the individual cable must be replaced. Any attempt to adjust the shift cables can cause poor shifting and/or transaxle damage. If the shift cable(s) must be replaced, proceed as follows:

1985-88

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the shift cable(s) and retaining clips at the transaxle.
  4.
  5. Remove the center console and shifter boot.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the shift cable(s) from the shifter assembly.
  8.
  9. Remove the left front sill plate and lift or pull the carpet back to gain access to the cables.
  10.
  11. Remove the retaining screws at the floor pan and remove the shift cable(s) from the car.
  12.

To install:
  1. Position the new cable(s) and install the retaining screws.
  2.
  3. Reposition the carpet and install the sill plate.
  4.
  5. Route the cable(s) to the transaxle. This is easier if the car is elevated and safely supported. Lower the car after the cables are in position.
  6.
  7. Position the cable(s) and install the retaining clips at the transaxle.
  8.
  9. Connect the cable(s) to the shifter assembly.
  10.
  11. Install the center console and shifter boot.
  12.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
